McPherson, Mary (3 MAR 1873 - 9 AUG 1937)

Mrs. Mary McPherson Homes passed away at Bowie, Texas, August 9th, a heart ailment being the cause of her death. She was well known to many of the people of Loyal as she was the daughter of W. B. McPherson, deceased and Rosetta Miles McPherson, deceased, and was born in Veefkind, Town of Sherman, March 3, 1873. She married Ralph Lee Homes in 1895, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dan Homes, also deceased.

She is survived by her husband; five sons, Allan, Irwin. Everett, Glenn, and Wilfred, who are residents of Phoenix, Arizona; one daughter, Dorothy, who was with her at the time of her death; one sister, Clara M. Manly, who resides in Seminole, Oklahoma, and three brothers. She was an aunt of Douglas McPherson of Chicago. Other relatives living in and near Loyal include Mrs. Elwin Cook, Helen Miles, and Mrs. Florence Castner.

Mrs. Homes was widely known for her writings of poetry and song, the Loyal Tribune having published her poem, "Sound of the Sea" in 1931. Many of her works have been published, including a lovely book of Christmas poems.

A funeral was held Aug. 10th in the church near Bowie, that Rev. Homes had built and where he and she had been preaching for the past three years. The body was shipped to Phoenix, Arizona, where another service was conducted and burial was in Greenwood Cemetery, Aug. 13th.
