Smith, Louise I. (18 DEC 1909 - 15 NOV 2006)

Louise I. Smith, 96, Loyal, died at Colonial Center, Colby, on Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2006. Funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 20, at the United Methodist Church, Loyal. The Rev. Wendell Williams officiated. Burial followed in the Loyal Cemetery. Pallbearers were her great grandsons: Erik Brown, Jeremy Brown, Ryan Meyer, Matt Druschke, Joe Maass and Luke Smith.

Louise Iva Millard was born on Dec. 18, 1909, in New Lisbon, to Verne and Iva (nee Clawson) Millard. Her family moved to the town of York in 1916. She attended Pleasant View School and graduated from Loyal High School in 1927. She married J. Vernon Smith on Sept. 3, 1928, in Loyal. After their marriage, the couple lived in Greenwood, Loyal, Vesper, Fond du Lac, and Colby. After her children were grown, she and her husband started working in nursing care facilities. They worked at the Bethel Convalescent Home, Arpin, at Northwood Health Center, Marshfield, and Sunburst Children’s Home, Neillsville, Wis. In 1958, the moved to Fond du Lac to manage the Fond du Lac County home until its closing. She then worked in a nursing home for one year and then managed the Senior Center. Fond du Lac. In 1973, they moved to Colby and in 1978 they moved back to Loyal. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on Sept. 3, 1978. Her husband died on Nov. 22, 1978. She continued to live in Loyal until entering the Colonial Center, Colby, in June 2000. She was a member of United Methodist Church, Loyal, United Methodist Women, and sang in the church choir for many years.

Survivors include one daughter, Virginia (Edward) Brown, Colby; two sons, Vernon "Bud" (Joan) Smith, Loyal, and Arnold Smith, Claycomo, Mo.; 21 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Ardis Paulson, Loyal; and one daughter-in-law, Maybelle Smith, Arkansas City, Kan.

Preceding her in death were here parents; her husband; two sons, Ronald in 1970 and Eldon in 2006; an infant grandson; one granddaughter, Deborah Smith; one sister, Irene Davidson; two brothers, Lloyd and Verland Millard; and one brother-in-law, Orell Paulson.

Cuddie Funeral Home, Loyal, assisted the family with arrangements.
