Altenburg, Charles L. (19 July 1860 - 3 June 1940)

C. L. Altenburg, Sanborn, N. D., at one time a resident of the town of Lynn, passed away Monday, June 3, aged 79 years, 10 months and 15 days. He had been in poor health for several years, but had not been in a serious condition until the day before his death. He was taken to Mercy Hospital at Valley City where he sank rapidly to the end.

He was born July 19, 1860, in Hazel Green, Wis. He grew to manhood in that community. While yet a young man he went with a cousin to Britt, Iowa, driving through with a camp wagon and a team of mules. It was an adventure of young men looking for work and new experiences. After three years at various jobs and satisfied that he had reached a good country, he bought a farm and started in business for himself. The following year he journeyed back to Wisconsin and to Cuba City, where he married a young woman named Isabella Curtiss on March 3, 1892, the young man taking his bride back to Britt.

Here they lived for nine years when the farm was sold and they returned to Wisconsin, settling at Lynn. They remained there until 1916 when they sold their farm and went to North Dakota, buying a place five miles southwest of Sanborn. This had been his home since, and in spite of adversities, Mr. Altenburg was able to make a success of farming, owing his place up to the time of his death. He was a sturdy, self reliant man, industrious and upright, finding in his home life the deep satisfaction which seeded ample reward for all his efforts.

Then children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Altenburg, nine of whom are living. One son, Harold, passed away April 11, 1913. His wife survives him and the remaining children are John, Nellie (Mrs. Lester Shafer), Gladys, (Mrs. Mandius Peterson), Marie (Mrs. Peter Rasmussen), Lillian (Mrs. William Lenz), all of Sanborn; Orville, Santa Rita, Mont.; Emma (Mrs. Russell Rehm), Eckelson; Warren, Litchville; and Bernice (Mrs. Emer Robinson), Neillsville, two brothers also survived him, John Altenburg, Granton, and Albert Altenburg, Hazel Green. He leaves also three sisters Etta and Emma Altenburg, Granton, and Delia (Mrs. James Tremelling), Granton. There are 21 grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at the farm home Thursday, June 6, at 1:45 p.m. and at the City Hall at Sanborn at 2:30, Rev. Thomas E. Nugent of Valley City, conducting the rites. The body was laid to rest in Fairview Cemetery at Sanborn.
