Stiefvater, Charles (1862? - 29 APR 1944)

Charles Stiefvater, 81, was born in Baden, Germany and came to the United States when a child. In 1887 he was married to Magdalen Hecker at Little Falls, Minn.

He conducted a shoe store at St. Wendel, Manitowoc Co., Wis., later moving to the farm 4 miles northeast of Greenwood (Clark Co., Wis.) where they resided until the death of his wife nine years ago. He then lived with his children here, going to Manitowoc last fall.

He passed away on April 29, 1944 at a Sheboygan hospital where he had been a patient for three moths. Her has been in poor health for several years.

He is survived by eight children: Robert and Gertrude of Manitowoc, Joseph and Edward of Salem, S.D., Mrs. Arthur Hatfield (Adeline) and Mrs. Harold Vandehey (Hildegard) of Alhambra, Calif., Mrs. Christ Scharenbrock (Clara) and Mrs. Nick Winkel (Josephine) Port Washington, 37 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

A Requiem High mass was read at Manitowoc on Monday, May 1, and the body was brought to Greenwood, where it was laid to rest in St. Mary’s Cemetery Tuesday morning, Rev. J.J. Novak officiated at the grave.

The pallbearers were Andrew Lindner, Tony Lindner, Wm. Denk and Lawrence Kitzhaber.

Those from away who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Robert Stiefvater and son Robert Jr. of Manitowoc, Josepha and Edward Stiefvater of Salem, S.D.
