Rieder, Robert (12 March 1858 - 8 Sept. 1936)

Robert Rieder, Sr., passed away at his home in this village Tuesday evening, Sept. 8, 1936, at 10:45 o’clock. He was born in Interlaken, Switzerland, on March 12, 1858, being 78 years, 5 months and 26 days in age at the time of his death.

Robert, together with four brothers and a sister, grew to manhood in Erlenbach, Canton Bern, Switzerland, where his parents, John and Susan Rieder, resided. All have preceded him in death excepting one brother, Adolph.

Mr. Rieder was educated at Erlenbach and was trained in the Swiss Army. He then took up the trade of gunsmith.

In 1882, he immigrated to America with a party of young men, and located at Monroe, Wisconsin, as a cheese-maker. Two years later at a double wedding he was united in marriage with Miss Emma Zeller, at New Glarus, and to this union were born seven children, two of whom died in infancy.

In 1909, Mr. Rieder brought his family to a farm west of Humbird, where he lived for many years. Fourteen years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Rieder moved to this village, which has been their home until the time of his death.

He was confirmed at Erlenbach and has since been a member of the Reformed Church. At New Glarus, he was, also, a member of the men’s choir.

On April 24, 1934, Mr. and Mrs. Rieder was fortunate in being able to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary, with their children and grandchildren.

He leaves to mourn his death his beloved wife; a brother Adolph of Portland, Oregon; three sons, Robert, Jr., Herman, and Ernest, farmers of this vicinity; two daughters, Mrs. Edwin Bleiler and Mrs. Louis Laffe, both of this village; and twelve grandchildren.

The funeral was held at the Reformed church Friday afternoon and burial was in Mentor Cemetery. Rev. V. D. Weidler, officiated. Many friends and relatives attended this service.
