Schroeder, John (1911? - 25 Jun. 1950)
The Spencer Fire Department was called out about 9 o’clock Sunday evening to the Norman Kuehling farm one mile and a half west of Unity, Wis. where a severe freak gust of wind had blown down the barn, trapping John Schroder, 39, under the wreckage.
Jacks were used to raise the timbers to extricate the man, who was pronounced dead by a physician summoned to the scene.
Schroeder, who comes from the Junction City area, moved to the Kuehling farm about 4 months ago. He and his wife had completed the chores and turned 23 head of stock out to pasture. Mrs. Schroeder left the barn for the house when the terrific gust struck.
Two calves were also in the barn but were taken out by neighbors, unharmed. Some machinery and hay was also damaged.
Also in the area and blown down by the wind was the large barn on the Glenn Kilty farm. There was no one injured at the Kilty farm, but some hay and machinery were ruined by the wreckage.
To the east of the Kuehling farm on K, a silo on the Richard Kuehling farm was destroyed as was one side of the barn on the Morris Morgan farm.
