GRANTON -- Douglas Opelt, 65, of Granton died Thursday, June 7, 2007, in the Palliative Care Unit of Saint Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield.
A private family memorial service will be held at the Gesche Funeral Home.
A gathering of friends and family will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, June 16, 2007, at the Mapleworks Restaurant in Granton.
Douglas Arthur Opelt was born on April 18, 1942, the son of Max and Irene (Crockett) Opelt. He graduated from Granton High School in 1960 and then worked as a machinist at Bucyres-Erie in Milwaukee, American Hoist in St. Paul, Minn., Boeing Aircraft in Renton, Wash., and Reynolds Metals in White Bear Lake, Minn. He then returned to Granton and took on an apprenticeship in plumbing at Schreiner's Plumbing in Marshfield. He worked for many contractors as a journeyman for more than 26 years with Local 778/434.
He was united in marriage to Joyce Garbisch in April 1964. They later divorced in October 1997.
Doug was an avid hunter -- bear, deer and small game. He owned many coon dogs and enjoyed trapping and his fishing trips to Canada.
Doug is survived by his sons, Brian (Rhonda) Opelt of Granton, Greg Opelt of Granton and Kevin D. Opelt of Neillsville; a daughter, Wendy (Chuck Jr.) Green of Marshfield; granddaughters, Jordan Green and Amber Mesar; and grandsons, Max and Brock Opelt. He is also survived by his brothers, Jerry (Fay) Opelt of Neillsville and Mike (Judy) Opelt of Milltown.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Max and Irene Opelt; a brother, John Opelt; and a sister, Arlene (Tom) Rosandich.
