Frieda (Sommer) Mellenthin, 82, Spencer, died Dec. 12, 1995, at St. Joseph’s Hospital hospice home, House of the Dove.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. John’s Lutheran Church in North Spencer. Burial will be in Colby Memorial Cemetery.
She was born May 23, 1913, in Edgar, to Otto and Susan (Martyn) Mesalk. She was married to Carl Sommer on Feb. 14, 1931, and he died on Sept. 18, 1970. She was then married to Arthur Mellenthin on Sept. 11, 1974, and he died Feb. 4, 1975.
She farmed in the Unity area, and later worked as a cook at Colby, Wis. High School. She worked at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield and then managed the Senior Citizens Meals at Spencer. She was an excellent seamstress.
She is survived by one daughter, Elaine (Thomas) Reynolds of Dorchester, one son, Marvin (Jeanette) Sommer of Unity; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; four step-children, Phillis Simson of Corpus Christi, Texas; Marlyn Hotsenpiller of Florence, Mont., Theone Lundquist of Mequon, and Ken (Lois) Mellenthin of Spencer; 17 step-grandchildren; four sisters, Linda (Ed) Morrill of Marshfield, Sally Schmidt of Kiethville, La., Lillian Denfeld of Wausau and Doris Nesbitt of Mosinee.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and five sisters.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in her name as the family will establish a memorial at a later date.
Frieda fought a long, hard battle against her illness but always remained cheerful and optimistic. She will be greatly missed by her family and many friends.
Community Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
