Schommer, Catherine (13 Sept. 1860 - 23 Jan. 1935)

Mrs. John Schommer, Sr., of the town of Hull, died Wednesday night, January 23rd, at the age of seventy-four years at the home of her son, B. M. Schommer, after being confined to her bed for six weeks, complications being the cause of her departure to the heavenly goal. She had been troubled with heart trouble ever since 1920 when she had the flu. Funeral services were held at St. Mary’s Catholic church Monday, Rev. L. J. Lang officiating, and internment was made in the Colby cemetery. Six grand sons acted as pall bearers and were Norbert Schommer, Harold Schommer, Joe Schommer, Leo Schommer, William VanRooy and Lambert VanRooy.

The deceased was born September 13, 1860, in Germany, and her maiden name was Miss Catherine Breiney. She came to America at the age of twelve years with her parents and lived at Hancock, Mich., where she was married fifty-six years ago. Mr. and Mrs. Schommer located in the town of Freedom, Outagamie county, and came to the town of Hull, Marathon county, in 1909, where they lived on a farm until Mr. Schommer’s death since which time she has resided with her son, Bernard, who is clerk of the town of Hull. She is survived by five sons, Bernard and Lambert of the town of Hull, John of Colby, Casper of Marshfield, and Raymond of Kaukauna; four daughters, Mrs. Albert DeBruin of Kaukauna, Mrs. Peter VanRooy of the town of Hull, Mrs. Carl Johnson of Milan, and Mrs. Elmer Olson of Dorchester, and a sister, Mrs. Magdalene Kergen, and a brother, Jacob Breiney, both of Houghton, Mich. Also fifty-two grand children.

The deceased was of a kindly and congenial disposition, a good Christian and a loving wife and mother. She inherited all the hospitable and gentle qualities of the early pioneers and she counted all who knew her as her friends.
