Richardson, John N. (23 Jan. 1857 - Jan. 1942)

Funeral services for John N. Richardson were held at the Schiller Funeral home last Thursday afternoon with the Rev. Obed Asp officiating. Four members selected from the Methodist Church choir sang, "Nearer My God to Thee" and "Some Day He’ll Make it Plain." The remains where interred in the Neillsville Cemetery.

Mr. Richardson was born at Poy Sippi, Wis., Jan. 23, 1857, to Daniel and Nancy Richardson. Had he lived until last Friday he would have been 85 years old.

When Mr. Richardson was four years of age, his father died in the Civil War, the mother being left with five small children. The family later moved to Pleasant Grove, Minn. At the age of 16, Mr. Richardson came to Wisconsin.

In 1867, at the age of 18, the young man came to Clark County. He worked in the woods for several years and then established himself on a farm in the town of Weston which remained his home until age made it necessary to retire. He was one of the pioneer farmers of Clark County, doing his just share toward bringing timber land to a state of cultivation.

He was married in October 1881 to Ella (Bourn) who passed away 44 years ago. They were the parents of eight children, four of whom preceded the parents in death. The surviving children are: Hal, Minneapolis; Jack, Eau Claire; Nell, Mrs. William Kelch, Markville, Minn., and Naomi, Mrs. C. Coveau, Klamath Falls, Oregon. He also is survived by two step-daughters, Mayme, Mrs. E. G. Laird, and Nell, Mrs. Walter Ellington, Portland, Oregon, since he was married a second time to Nancy Hannah. Their marriage took place at Eau Claire, June 25, 1908. They are twelve grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren.

Those who attended the funeral from distant places were:

Mr. and Mrs. Hal Richardson, Minneapolis; Mr. and Mrs. Jack Richardson, Sylvia, Norma and James, Eau Claire; Mrs. Will Kelch, Markville, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Clinton Conveau, Klamath Falls, Oregon, and son, James Conveau, Markville, Minn.; Mrs. O. T. Werts, Mrs. Charles Allsup, Wilbur Mitchell, Watertown, South Dakota; Mr. and Mrs. Walter Welch, Earl Welch, Mrs. E. Wambsgans and Mrs. Effie Brown all of Stewartville, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Will Popelka, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Holets and Mrs. Will Anderson, Chatfield, Minn.

Those in attendance from South Dakota, Stewartville and Chatfield, Minn., are all nieces and nephews of the departed.

The pallbearers were Matt Schaefer, Nick Schaefer, John Hauser, Robert Frantz, and Fred Lear, and Lin Shaw.

Mr. and Mrs. Hal Richardson left Wednesday morning for Minneapolis, having spent most of the time for the past several weeks here assisting Mrs. Richardson with the care of his father and with the funeral arrangements after his death. Mrs. Richardson expects to go to Minneapolis later. For the present she will stay with her sister, Mrs. Neil Northup at the William Plumer home.
