AUGUSTA - Darwin R. Smith, 57, of S7445 State Road 27, passed away Wednesday, June 23, 2004, at his home.
Darwin, son of Bergen and Alice (Hyland) Smith, was born June 9, 1947, in Neillsville, Wis. He graduated from Neillsville High School and from UW-Eau Claire. He married Carolyn Jackson in 1967, in Eau Claire. Darwin had made his home in Augusta since 1972. Darwin taught several years at Osseo-Fairchild High School, where he coached wrestling and cross-country. He later worked in the U.C.P. office for West Central Wisconsin. He was currently employed through the CESA program, where he had set up classes for at-risk students in Chippewa Falls, Eau Claire, Menomonie and Neillsville, Wis. He had also taught in Menomonie and was presently teaching at the Clark County Alternative School in Neillsville, Wis. He was united in marriage to Roxane Lane on July 18, 1987, in Hallie.
Darwin enjoyed watching movies, television programs and all types of sporting events. He was a collector of various items, but his most treasured collection was his collection of friends and students.
He is survived by his wife, Roxane of Augusta; son, Nathan Smith (Nicol Brown) of Augusta; stepson, Chris Martin of Eau Claire; step-granddaughter, Nevada Martin; eight siblings, Ralph Smith of Michigan; Herbert (Dawn) Smith of Milwaukee; Bonnie (Chuck) Straube of Grafton; Arlo (Shirley) Smith of Peyton, Colo.; Gladys (Art) Bowen of Meza, Ariz.; Nancy (James) Breitung, Etta (Bob) Czarnik, all of Neillsville; Duane (Carla) Smith of Racine. His parents and four siblings preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be held Monday, June 28, 2004, at 2 p.m. at the Anderson Funeral Home in Augusta. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, and until time of services Monday at the funeral home.
