Benson, Carl #3 (4 FEB 1861 - 26 SEP 1940)

Carl Benson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bernt Hol, was born Feb. 4, 1861, on a homestead known as Ericksmoen, located in the township of Waller, Province of Solor in Norway. He was the eleventh child of twelve children.

In April 1881 he emigrated to America, as had other sisters and brothers before him, and joined some of them at Blair, Wis.

A short time later he secured employment with the Sawyer and Austin Lumber Co., working in the lumber camps in Clark County during the winters, and on the Sawyer farm, later known as the Bowen farm, located one mile west of Longwood (Clark Co., Wis.), during the summers. He was employed by the Sawyer and Austin Co. for approximately 16 years.

On Oct. 1, 1891, he became united in marriage to Jorgine Marie Jorgenson at Eau Claire. From this wedlock were born four children, namely Leonard, Mathilde, Roy and Guy. Two sons, Roy and Guy, passed away during early manhood, and his wife, Jorgine, ordinarily called Gena, preceded him in death on Nov. 6, 1935.

The greater part of part of Carl Benson’s life was spent as a farmer in Longwood Township, Clark County, where he, his wife and family gained a wide acquaintance and a host of friends.

Carl and Mrs. Benson were active in helping to form the present church organization in Longwood. Mrs. Benson was very active in church auxiliaries and Carl Benson headed the church councils during the time the present Lutheran Church in Longwood was built. He, until overtaken by old age, was active in all matters pertaining to community welfare.

His death, on Sept. 16, 1940, at the age of 79 years, 7 months and 22 days, is mourned by his two surviving children, Leonard and Mathilde; his three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Olive Rund of Minneapolis, Minn., who on account of failing health was unable to attend; and many other relatives and countless friends.

Funeral services were conducted on Sept. 29 from the Norwegian Lutheran Church at Longwood, Rev. A. Norson officiating at the service. Interment was made at the church cemetery.

Flower girls were six grand nieces from Blair and Maxine Thorson of Withee, Wis.

Pallbearers at the services were Carl Sorenson, Henry Sorenson, Alvin Thorson, Oscar Anderson, Julius Bredeson and Peter Larson.

Relatives from out of town who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. L.B. Benson, Leonard Benson Jr., and Darlene Benson from Racine; Mr. and Mrs. Chris Olson of Black river Falls; Mr. and Mrs. Oluf Ericksmoen, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Ericksmoen, Milton Ericksmoen, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Nyen, Miss Vera Nyen, Mrs. Basil Nyen, Mr. and Mrs. Victor Nyen, Mr. and Mrs. Helmer Nyen, Harvey Nyen and Miss Viola Gunderson, all of Blair; Miss Norma Nye of Ettrick; Palmer Edwards and Don Edwards of Spooner.
