Raine, Hannah Luella (18 Nov. 1862 - 18 June 1943)

Mrs. John Raine passed away Friday evening, June 18, 1943, at 8:45 o’clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Harold Shedden, in Manawa, following an illness of six weeks.

Hannah Luella was born to William and Miranda Evans on November 18, 1862, at Vinegar Hill, Ill. On January 27, 1881, she was married to John W. Raine at Hazel Green, Wis. For ten years after their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Raine lived near Benton, where Mr. Raine worked in the lead mines. They spent the next thirteen years on farms near Cuba City. In 1904 they moved to Clark County, where they bought the Lindsey farm west of the fair grounds. This was the family home until 1918 when they moved to Neillsville, Wis. Here Mr. Raine passed away February 13, 1931. Soon after, Mrs. Raine made her home with her son-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Shedden. For the past five years she has lived with them at Manawa.

Mrs. Raine has been a faithful servant of the church, having joined the Pleasant Ridge Church many years ago. Later she was an active member of the Local Methodist Ladies’ Aid and at the time of her death was a member of the Martha Circle of the Manawa Methodist Church. Even though she had been separated for some time from her friends in this community, she continued to be keenly interested in their well-being and sympathetic with them in their problems. She often expressed the regret that she could no longer visit with them. Although she never knew the companionship of a mother since her own mother died when she was very small child, she leaves with her children the memory of a most loving and devoted mother and homemaker. This interest has reached out to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Surviving are three children: Ruby, Mrs. Harold Shedden, Manawa; Clyde and Everett, Neillsville, Wis. Three children preceded her in death: Ella, Mrs. Harold Huckstead; Maude, Mrs. Ernest Brown; and Fred. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and a sister, Mrs. Nellie Baldwin, Los Angeles, Calif.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Obed Asp Tuesday morning at the home at Manawa and at three o’clock at the Methodist church in this city. Interment was made in the Neillsville Cemetery.
