Thums, Charles P. (16 MAY 1886 - 19 NOV 1940)

The death of Charles Peter Thums, Monday, Nov. 19, at 2 p.m. cast a shadow of sorrow over our village. Mr. Thums suffered a heart attack in the early summer from which he recovered sufficiently to be about his regular work. Another severe attack Sunday, however, caused his death after one day’s suffering.

Mr. Thums was born in Marshfield, May 16, 1886. There he spent his boyhood and young manhood, and there he was married in 1908 to Miss Helena Jirschele. In Marshfield Mr. and Mrs. Thums spent the first eight years of married life, moving to Loyal in 1916.

After coming to Loyal, Mr. Thums was employed till the time of his death, a period of twenty-five years, in plumbing and in the hardware business of James McGonigal and Son. His cheerful disposition and dependable character won the confidence of his employers and others whom he served and made him a neighbor whose absence will be keenly felt.

Surviving Mr. Thums are his widow, two daughters, Mrs. Warner (Marcella) Berry, Loyal, and Mrs. Karl (Beatrice) Rice, Abbotsford; two sons, Earl Thums, Manitowoc, and Verland Thums, at home; and one granddaughter, Sue Rice, Abbotsford, Wis. Also surviving are his mother, Mrs. Joseph (Pauline) Thums, Sr., Marshfield; nine sisters, Mrs. R. A. Bastian, Chicago, Mrs. Louis (Frances) Biechler, Marshfield, Mrs. Ben (Pauline) Huffman, Marshfield, Mrs. Lovelle (Sophie) Loiselle, Chippewa Falls, Mrs. Fred (Anne) Raap, Wausau, Mrs. H. W. (Barbara) Beckgren, Minneapolis, Mrs. Jack (Bloudina) Quirk, San Francisco, Calif., Miss Isabelle Thums, Marshfield, and Miss Jule Thums, Milwaukee; and two brothers, Joseph and Ferdinand Thums both of Marshfield.

Preceding him in death were his infant son, Victor, his father, Mr. Joseph Thums, and a sister, Mrs. Willard (Veronica) Christensen.

Funeral services were in St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Friday morning at 9 o’clock, Father Aloys Zinthefer officiating. Burial was made in the Catholic cemetery at Hillside, Marshfield.

The pall bearers were Mr. O. W. Trindal, Mr. Albert Davel, Mr. Elmer Neuman, Mr. Ed Bertz, Mr. Joe Wedl, and Mr. Leo Theisen.
