Burow, Gustave M. (4 Apr. 1894 - 23 Feb. 1946)

Dr. A. W. Burek, Marathon county coroner, Monday pronounced as suicide the death of Gustave M. Burow, age 51, bachelor farmer and a World War I veteran, whose body was discovered Saturday afternoon in his town of Frankfort home with a bullet wound in the head.

The coroner announced that there would be no inquest.

Burow had shot himself in the region of the left temple with a .22-caliber rifle, which lay along side of the body, the coroner said. Despondency was the apparent reason for the act, he stated.

Discovery of Burow’s body was made by Herbert Burow, young son of Fred Burow, brother of the dead man, who lives across the road. The lad had gone to his uncle’s house because of his failure to appear in the vicinity for two or three days, according to the coroner.

His brother’s family saw a light in Gustave’s house, where he lived alone, Friday night about 10:30 o’clock, Dr. Burek said.

Dr. Burek was told by Fred Burow that his brother had been worrying because he fancied suspicion was directed against him for a recent house burning in the neighborhood. Letters found in the house gave similar suspected evidence, the coroner declared.

Burow was born April 4, 1894, in Dodge county, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Burow. He came to Marathon county in 1914 and located in the town of Wien, moving to the town of Frankfort in 1917.

Besides his brother, he is survived by a sister, Mrs. Charles Benter, who lives in Dodge county.
