Family Trouble Ends With Shotgun Blast

James Warwick, 26, a marine veteran, was in "fair" condition in St. Mary’s hospital, Wausau, suffering from a severe gunshot wound in his left leg as the result of a shooting affair at the home of Andrew Schilling of Wausau, Warwick’s father-in-law, early Monday morning.

Frank G. Loeffler, district attorney, declared that Schilling, in a statement, admitted firing a 20-gauge shotgun charge through two doors of his home, striking Warwick as the latter was demanding entrance into his house to get his wife, Jane, and their two children.

After questioning by the district attorney, Schilling was released pending further developments.

The affair, according to police reports, began when Mrs. Warwick reported to police that her husband, an insurance salesman, was drinking and asked that he be picked up. She took her children and left the Warwick residence and went to the home of her parents to spend the night.

About 2:00 o’clock Warwick went to the Schilling home in a taxi cab to get his wife and children. Police said they were informed Warwick told the cab driver "someone will get killed." While the cab waited, he beat on the front door of the Schilling home. He was armed with a steel (a knife sharpener) about 10 inches long.

Mrs. Schilling answered the door and told Warwick to go home and return in the morning. After arguing, he beat on a storm door, breaking the glass and kicking in a panel.

Schilling then came to the door. Warwick demanded his children and continued to hammer on the door, police were told. He also voiced some threats, it was reported.

Schilling went after his shotgun and put a shell in the chamber. He warned Warwick that he had a gun and when the ex-marine continued to hammer on the door, he stepped back about six feet and fired low through the two doors, including the storm door, according to the police version of the shooting.
