Merkel, Arthur A. (23 Oct. 1886 - 4 Oct. 1952)

Arthur A. Merkel, manager of the Consumers Store in Marshfield and a former citizen of Colby, died Saturday night at the Marshfield, Wisconsin Hospital at the age of 65 years, cerebral hemorrhage being the cause of his death. He suffered a severe heart attack on May 24 and was on leave from his duties at the Consumers Store since that time.

Mr. Merkel was born in Marshfield on October 23, 1886. He married the former Helen Ligman in Mosinee on September 14, 1915, after which the couple moved to Colby where he served as assistant manager of the Colby State Bank. Later he helped organize the Security State Bank and also managed the Farmer’s Equity Cooperative.

The family then moved to Mosinee where he owned and operated a general store, and later, took over the operation of a similar store in Junction City. After the dissolution of Kestel Brothers store in Marshfield in 1923, Mr. Merkel was called in to reorganize the business which became Consumers Store.

Funeral services were held Wednesday morning at St. John’s Catholic church in Marshfield, the Very Rev. Hugh J. Deeny officiating, and burial was made in Hillside cemetery.

Surviving are his wife and three children.
