Schumann, Bertha (15 Oct. 1861 - 9 June 1955)

Funeral services were held on Sunday afternoon at St. Paul’s Lutheran church at Green Grove, Wisconsin for Mrs. August Schumann who died at her home in the town of Colby last Thursday morning at 11:40 o’clock. Rev. August W. Saremba officiated at the services and internment was made in the parish cemetery.

Pall bearers were Frederick and Rudy Dins and Edwin, Glen and William Frome, all grand sons of the deceased, and Eli Krueger, a great grand son of the deceased.

Flowers were in charge of Miss Dorothy Dins, Mrs. Richard Young and Mrs. Gordon Mellenthin, grand daughters of the deceased, and Miss Audrey Krueger, a great grand daughter of the deceased.

The church choir sang two German selections with Mrs. Paul Woik as organist.

Mrs. Schumann, the former Bertha Laux, was born on October 15, 1861, in the town of Scheberg, Manitowoc county. On May 6th, 1884, she married August Schumann in the town of Herman, Sheboygan. Immediately after their marriage, the couple came to Colby, and, by hard and diligent work, built a fine farm out of what was a wilderness. Mr. Schumann died in March, 1930.

Mrs. Schumann is survived by three children - Mrs. Louise Dins, Mrs. Edwin (Lydia) Frome, Sr., and Fred Schumann, all of Colby; a brother, Peter Laux of the town of Scheberg; 19 grand children, 30 great grand children and one great, great grand child. Three children, four sisters and two brothers preceded her in death.

Mrs. Schumann was a good Christian, honest in all her dealings, and never forgot the hospitable ways of the early settlers of this community. She was always ready to lend a helping hand wherever needed.

Out of town people here for the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Rudy Dins and Mr. and Mrs. Ed Kraemer of Sheboygan, Mr. and Mrs. Celece Maboson of Plymouth, Mr. and Mrs. Goe Atrope and Mrs. Art Roethel of Cleveland, Harvey Laux of Kiel, Miss Emilie Geise of Medford, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Cliver and Mr. and Mrs. Laurence Krueger of Marshfield, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Schauer of Spencer and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Lake of Medford.
