Matt Melcher Story, 76, an early settler in Thorp (Clark Co., Wis.), passed away at his farm home near Jump River, of a stroke, on Thursday, July 23, 1942. Mr. Story and his wife have been residing at Jump River for the past seven years, moving there from Eidsvold.

The deceased was born in Cedarburg, Wis., on Jan. 2, 1866. While still a small boy he came to Thorp with his mother, brother and sisters in about the year 1873, and lived on a 160-acre homestead in what is now the Roger Crek territory four miles west of here. He was brought up in the schools of the community and helped in clearing of land and the development of the country. At one time he operated the Forest Queen Hotel in the village of Thorp.

On Jan. 21, 1888, he was united in marriage at Stanley to Addie Warner, who survives him. They had four children, all of whom are living; Leo J. Story of Gilman, Olive (Mrs. D.D. Chrismore) of Stanley, Gertrude (Mrs. Jas. Asplin) of Owen and Gladys (Mrs. Lester Baker) of Sharon, Wis. A brother, Frank Story, preceded him in death.

A short service was given at the home at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, July 27th and at two o’clock funeral services were conducted at the church at Jump River, Rev. Fischer of Hannibal officiating. Interment was made in the nearby cemetery. Pallbearers were Frank Wolfe, Matt Welte, Roy Warner, Fritz Exstrom, Ralph Shilts and Henry Zack.
