Rossow, Donald E. (5 DEC 1926 - 25 NOV 1943)

Donald Elton Rossow, 16, son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Rossow, Owen (Clark Co., Wis.), was killed in an automobile accident Thursday evening of last week when the car which he was driving crashed into the Popple River bridge south of Owen on County Trunk N.

Rossow, accompanied by a companion, LeRoy Bower, was driving east on the highway, when he lost control of the car, which crashed into the guard rails on the left side of the bridge, the car tipping over and striking the right hand side of the bridge. Rossow, who was driving, was fatally hurt in the accident, and when found by his companion, was lying under the car. He suffered a bad skull fracture, face cuts and internal injuries, wile his companion escaped without injury.

Bower went to the Twait home a short distance east of the bridge and Mr. Twait and he returned to the scene of the accident, where they picked the injured lad up and brought him to the office of Dr. J.W. Johnson at Withee, who at once pronounced him dead. They then brought the body to Owen and notified Oscar Griebenow of the accident as well as County Traffic Officer Kenneth Mathewson, who in turn notified the coroner.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon from the Griebenow Funeral Home (Owen, Wisconsin), the Rev. Abbott, pastor of the Methodist Church of Greenwood officiating, and burial was made in Riverside Cemetery.

Donald Elton Rossow was born in the village of Greenwood (Clark Co.) on Dec. 5, 1926, and died on Thursday, Nov. 25, 1943, at the age of 16 years, 11 months and 20 days. The cause of his death being an automobile accident.

He first attended school in the Beaver Center School, in the town of Beaver, also in the Joint School in the town of Green Grove. He finished his grade school years in the Longwood School, town of Longwood.

When the family moved to Withee in 1941, he attended the Withee High School his freshman year.

The next year the family moved to Owen, and there he attended high school for his sophomore year, and was in his junior year when death took him away.

He leaves to mourn his loss, his mother and father, four sisters, Mrs. Earl (Gladys) Plaman of Withee, Phyllis, Audrey and Karen at home, one brother, Pvt. Paul Jr., stationed at Richmond, Virginia, besides several aunts, uncles and cousins and a host of friends.

Donald was a quiet, reserved young man, very well liked by everyone, and the esteem and respect in which he was held was shown by the many beautiful floral offerings, and friends who came to pay tribute to him.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at two o’clock from the Griebenow Funeral Home (Owen, Wisconsin), with Rev. Alex Abbot officiating. The pallbearers were very dear friends of his - Donald Teclaw, Donald Thorson, Richard Needham, Orville Hendrickson, Edmond Okonski, George Bower. Flowers were carried by six of his schoolmates, Ruth Awe, Grace Scheel, Ilene Awe, Donna Jean Marsh, Lorraine Luoma, Caroline Rogalski. The Marking sisters sang three beautiful songs, "The Old Rugged Cross," Nearer My God to Thee," and "What a Friends we Have in Jesus." He was laid to rest in Riverside Cemetery.
