Olson, Mr. and Mrs. Oluf (57th - 1958)

Former Colby and Abbotsford Residents have lived in city since 1918 -

Mr. and Mrs. Oluf Olson, who were married in Colby Township, Clark County on March 27, 1901, will observe their 57th wedding anniversary today (Thursday) at their home in Neillsville.

Mr. Olson was born near Oslo, Norway, February 4, 1871, and came with his mother to America when he was 19 months old, locating at Greenwood, and joining his father who had preceded them to America to earn transportation for the family.  Eight months later, the Olson family settled on a homestead a mile north of Curtiss.  There Oluf Olson grew to manhood, attending a rural school in the wilderness for four years. This homestead farm is now operated by Wayne Olson, a nephew of Oluf and a son of Oluf’s youngest brother, Otto.

As a youth, Mr. Olson worked in a lumber camp, taking a man’s place from the time he was 16.  When he was 30, he was married to Myrtle M. Tuttle, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F. M. Tuttle, at the Tuttle farm in Colby Township.  The bride was then 26.

After the wedding he took his bride to Medford, where he worked in a sawmill, riding the carriage from April 4 to November 13, 1901.  Then they returned to the Olson homestead north of Curtiss.  During the next three years, Mr. and Mrs. Olson operated three different farms in Clark and Marathon County, and in 1907 they moved to Abbotsford, where Mr. Olson became village marshal and served as section foreman on the Ashland-Spencer railroad for seven years.

"I remember," states Mrs. Olson, "carrying a ladder round the Abbotsford business district each evening to light the oil street lights.  We didn’t have to put them out in the morning as they usually ran out of kerosene before daylight."

"We had a jail 14 by 14 feet on the Clark County side of Abbotsford, where we usually had some drunken lumberjacks sobering up," he continued.  "We never fined them just for being drunk; but if they got to fighting they had to pay a fine before being released from jail.  The most drunks I remember having in the jail at one time was seven."

Four strangers came to Abbotsford during Mr. Olson’s term as marshal, remained on the marathon side of the village for several days, and one night tried to rob the bank at Abbotsford. One was apprehended at Merrillan Junction, and after standing trial in Wausau, was sentenced to 10 years in the state prison. The men had gotten into the bank without difficulty, but had been unable to get into the vault.

In 1914 the Olson family moved to Neillsville and lived nearly four years on South Hewett Street in the house now owned by Mr. and Mrs. Herman Dahnert, just south of what was then the MacMillan residence.

During the summer of 1918, they acquired a home on Court Street in which they have since lived.  On coming to Neillsville Mr. Olson took a position as building custodian of the courthouse, and as bailiff and deputy sheriff. For 36 years he served in this triple capacity.  Since 1950 he has served as a part time employee at the courthouse, and has continued as bailiff.

Mr. and Mrs. Olson, are the parents of 10 children, two of whom are not living. Francis died in infancy and Robert died at the age of 25.  The living children are: Mrs. Maynard (Ellen) Johnson, who is teaching in the Wausau school system; Mrs. David (Barbara) Daniel of Cambria; Mrs. Ewald (Sarah) Schwarze, Greenwood; Gilbert, Rice Lake; Mrs. Albert (Fern) Holt, and Kenneth of Neillsville; Mrs. Lowell (Mildred) Dorn, Abbotsford; and Oluf, Jr., Wisconsin Rapids.  They also have 26 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

All nine of Mr. and Mrs. Olson’s children were graduated from Neillsville High School.

Taking part in the anniversary today (Thursday) will be the Kenneth Olson and Albert Holt families of Neillsville, Mrs. Ellen Johnson, with the other children possibly dropping in for the evening.

                                                                   Oluf Olson and Family

OLUF THOMAS OLSON, a well-known and popular resident of Neillsville, where for several years he has been custodian of the Clark County Court House, was born in Norway Feb. 4, 1871, son of Arne C. and Ellen (Johnson) Olson. His parents settling in Mayville Township, Clark County, when it was a wilderness, he acquired his education in the district school, which stood in the middle of a wood, through which not infrequently roamed bears and wolves, so that his journeys to and from school were flavored to some extent with the spirit of adventure. During his early years after was big enough he worked on his parents' farm, and when older began working tin the woods at lumbering, in which occupation he continued during the winters for about fifteen years.

At the end of that time he was united in marriage with Myrtle Tuttle, of Colby Township, who was born Oct. 31, 1875, daughter of F. M. and Barbara Ann (Shanks) Tuttle. Their wedding took place March 27, 1901, and for a year afterwards Mr. Olson worked in the sawmill at Medford. During the next two years he resided on his father's farm, and also served as township clerk and school director of the graded school of Curtis. He then moved to a farm in Marathon County, Wis., which he operated for three years, and then, returning to Clark County, took up his residence in the village of Abbotsford, being in the employ of the railroad company for a year and a half. At the end of that time he was appointed marshal of the village, and served in that position and as deputy sheriff for seven years. In 1914 he was appointed janitor of the court house at Neillsville, which position he has since filled very acceptable, taking pride in his work and keeping not only the building, but the surrounding grounds in the the most perfect condition.

He is a member of the Masonic Blue Lodge No. 204, A. F. A. M., and Medford Chapter R. A. M., No. 70, also of the Woodmen's camp at Neillsville. His religious affiliations are with the Presbyterian Church, of which he is a member and trustee. Mr. Olson and his wife have been the parents of a good sized family, numbering ten children, all of whom are living but one. The record of names with dates of birth, is as follows: Ellen Margaret, April 22, 1902 Barbara Ann, Aug. 9, 1903 Robert Marion, April 23, 1905 Sarah Emma, Nov. 7, 1906 Gilbert Byron, Aug. 22, 1908 Fern Mabel, Oct. 17,1910, Kenneth Arne, Jan. 9, 1913 Mildred May, Jan. 15, 1914 Oluf Thomas, June 22, 1916. The one deceased was Francis Marion, Born Jan. 25, 1912, who died Jan. 27, two days after birth.

Notes

Oluf Olson, the new janitor at the courthouse, moved down from Abbotsford last week and spent a few days with Louie Hantke in the courthouse in order to get the run of the work before Mr. Hantke entered upon his new duties as sheriff.  Mr. Olson has got "on-to the job" readily and will make an ideal caretaker of the county property.  He and his family have moved into the Sam Miner house on south Hewett Street.  Clark County Press, Neillsville, Wisconsin, January, 1915.

Oluf Olson Sr. has resigned as janitor of the Clark County Courthouse, a position he has held for the last 34 years.

His resignation was accepted Saturday by the country public property committee, and is effective January 1, 1949. However, Mr. Olson has assured the committee that he will remain on the job until a suitable successor has been named.

In the point of service, Mr. Olson is one of the oldest, if not the oldest, courthouse janitor in the state. It has been heard that there is one older janitor who is 81. Mr. Olson is 78.

"It will be a good deal, like leaving home," Mr. Olson commented following his resignation. And the courthouse in reality has been a second home for him in the last 34 years. He has kept the fires going and the walks cleaned, moved and raked lawn, carried its mail, plus a good many other chores, for almost one-half of his life. He has started the days early and quit late.

Judge Schoengarth and Ben Frantz, the country judge and clerk of circuit court, are the only one remaining, who were there to greet Mr. Olson when he came down from Abbotsford in 1914 to take over the janitor's job. At that time, Mr. Frantz was in the county judge's office.
