Burss, Charles E. (12 APR 1873 - 6 JAN 1943)

On Wednesday, Jan. 6th, 1943, Charles E. Burss, 69, died of a heart attack while traveling on a train at Wells, Nevada, when on his way home to Thorp (Clark Co., Wis.) from Benecia, Calif., where he has been the past year. He had been in fairly good health and working. He, however, knew of his condition at the time he was stricken, for he wrote the name of his destination and his wife’s address on the envelope enclosing his railroad tickets. Mrs. Burss has been at Kohler, Wis., and also was on her way to Thorp to meet her husband.

Charles Edward Burss was born in the Town of Reseburg on April 12, 1873. His father was one of the pioneers of this community and Chas. E. was one of the first children born here. He resided on a farm south of Thorp after his marriage and moved to the village in the year 1920. His entire life was spent in Thorp with the exception of one year at Dorchester, Wis. Mr. Burss served as Village Trustee for several years, and also as constable and village Marshall for a longer term. He was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows of Thorp and was head of that organization at the time of his death.

He is survived by four sons, Russell E. of Milwaukee, Vilas R. of Chicago, Vernon M. of Benicia, Calif., and Leland D. of Miami Beach, Fla. (U.S. Army), two daughters, Mrs. Edgar Jacob of Kohler, Wis., and Mrs. Elmer Reichow of St. Paul, Minn., two sisters, Mrs. Etta Porter of Eau Claire and Carrie Burss of Hannibal; six brothers, Wilbert of Sheldon, Riley and Walter of Hannibal, Gilbert of Rapid City, S.D., Harrison of Chicago, and Delbert of Thorp, and six grandchildren.

The body arrived at Thorp on Monday and funeral services were conducted by Rev. H. Lee of the Methodist Church, at Thorp Funeral Home at 2:00 o’clock Tuesday afternoon. Interment took place in the family lot in the Reseburg Cemetery. Pallbearers were brother Odd Fellows, J.E. Lund, Mike Kronberg, M.C. Boardman, Chris Larsen, Chet Glasshof and A.W. Emerson.
