CHARLES Merrill, saw mill and lumberman, Merrillan, was born in Glenburn, Me., Sept. 4, 1839. Came to Wisconsin in 1859, and settled at Sparta, where he remained until the Spring of 1864, working in the woods during the Winters. Went to Montana at the time of the mining excitement, and followed mining until 1875. Returned to Merrillan. where he had an interest in a planing mill with his brother George, which was known as the Geo. Merrill & Co. Planing Mills. Is a member of the A. F. & A. M. order. Was married, March 28, 1878, to Miss Allie Smith. She was born in Columbia County, Wis., in 1855. They have two children, Maud B. and Charles O.

Charles J. Merrill was the son of Andrew and Mary (Cummings) Merrill who married 15 Apr 1823 in Albany, Oxford, Maine.  Andrew Merrill died 13 Oct 1852 in Glenburn, Penoboscot, Maine.  Mary "Polly" (Cummings) Merrill was born 5 Jul 1800 in Albany, Oxford, Maine and died 18 Sep 1898 in Heraldsburg, Sonoma, California.  She had moved to Merrillan, Wisconsin about 1889 and went west to live with her daughter, Mary in Heraldsburg, California.
