50th Anniversary of Methodist Church

The special services in observance of the Fiftieth Anniversary of the Methodist Church building in Unity, last Sunday, were well attended by members, former members, and friends of the church. Dr. Richard Miller, Professor of Church Administration, Director of Field Work, and Counselor of Admissions of Garrett Biblical Institute, Evanston, Illinois, was guest speaker at the morning services. He stated that "The Church is a Symbol for all that Which is Good." He went on to say that "The Church is a Symbol for the Greater Values in Life - Love, Truth, Justice, Purity."

The Rev. Lee Holmes, La Crosse, Wisconsin, a son of the congregation, was the guest speaker at the afternoon service speaking on the theme "The Church’s One Foundation Is Jesus Christ Her Lord." At this service "Keepsake Plates" with a picture of the Unity Methodist Church on them were presented to Mrs. Orra Mabbott of Oshkosh, Wis., and Mrs. Alma Scott of Baraboo, Wis. In the absence of Mrs. Mabbott the plate was presented to her son, B. W. Mabbott, Unity, Wis. Mrs. Mabbott is the oldest member of the congregation and will be ninety-one years of age on November 16.

During the Fellowship dinner held in the church basement at noon, the Rev. M. Ferguson, Virocqua, Wis., a former pastor of the church and the Rev. George Vaughan, Madison, Wis., a son of the congregation, spoke about memories of the past. A lovely cake topped with a replica of the present church, decorated one of the tables. The dinner was prepared and served by members of the W.S.C.S.

In addition to the special choir numbers, former members, Mrs. Russell Andrews and Mrs. Gerald Scott, sang solos, "Only Believe" and "I Believe in God," respectively.

Out of town guests attending the celebration were Mrs. Alma Scott and Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Scott and family, Baraboo; Mrs. George Anderson, Mr. Carroll, Ill.; Mr. and Mrs. Mahlon Wilson, Jean and Thelma, Waupaca; Mr. and Mrs. Perry Nicalofson and family, Schofield; Mrs. Irene Harger and daughter, Lake Delton; Mrs. Clarence Ravey, Plainfield; Mr. and Mrs. Sewell Cook, Wisconsin Rapids; Ray Cook, Stevens Point; Mrs. R. Cook, Marathon; Mr. and Mrs. C. Spry, Neillsville; Mr. Gust Voss, Dorchester; and members of the neighboring Methodist Churches from Loyal, York Center, Greenwood, Marshfield, Colby and Spencer.
