Mellenthin, Oscar (26 Nov. 1918 - 12 Mar. 2004)

Oscar H. Mellenthin, 85, of Beaver Dam, passed away on Friday, March 12, 2004 at Beaver Dam Community Hospital in Beaver Dam.

He was born on November 26, 1918 in Clark County, the son of the late Albert and Elsie (Schroeder) Mellenthin. On June 27, 1942 he was united in marriage to Deloris Krueger at St. Stephen’s Ev. Lutheran Church in Beaver Dam.

Oscar enjoyed people and was very involved in his community. He was an active member of St. Stephen’s Ev. Lutheran Church in Beaver Dam and was a past president of the church council.

He was the owner of Beaver Sport Shop in Beaver Dam for 35 years and sponsored many municipal sporting leagues, including softball and basketball. He served two terms as alderman for Beaver Dam, was a member of the Beaver Dam Rotary, where he served as secretary for 22 years, was a past president and was a Paul Harris Fellow.

Oscar was a member of the Beaver Dam Chamber of Commerce serving on the Board of Directors, was the manager of the boy’s baseball recreation league for many years and was a Hunter Safety instructor for 31 years.

He was a member of Trout Unlimited, Beaver Dam Conservation Club, the Senior Citizens of Beaver Dam, the Senior Citizen Third Street Band and was a former member of the Fisherman Club.

Oscar loved to whittle and to share his crafts with others. He was a devoted husband and loving father and grandfather who will be deeply missed by his family and many friends.

Survivors include his loving wife of 61 years, Deloris of Beaver Dam; three children, James (Mary) Mellenthin of Ripon, Cheryl Mellenthin and her husband, Mark Chapman of Cat Spring, Texas and Barbara (Dale) Walker of Beaver Dam; one brother, Wilbur (Jean) Mellenthin of Spencer; one sister, Eleanor Luepke of Spencer; five grandchildren, Michelle and Erin Mellenthin, Bruce, Bonnie and Billie Walker; one step grandchild, Carter Chapman; two great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Raymond and Gordon Mellenthin and one sister, Shirley Yelich.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, March 16, at St. Stephen’s Ev. Lutheran Church in Beaver Dam. Rev. Phillip Heyer will officiate and burial will follow in Highland Memory Cemetery in Beaver Dam.

Friends may call on Tuesday, March 16 at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of services.

The Miller Funeral Home in Kewaskum is serving the family.
