Automobile Project Added To County's 4-H Program "What can we do to provide more educational opportunities for our 4-H members to learn the safe care and operation of automobiles? How can they enjoy the fullest opportunities as a safe and efficient automobile driver?" These were questions 4-H adult leaders were asking last fall when the 1964 club program was being planned. Glenn Thompson, county 4-H Club agent, said.
With these questions to be answered, the 4-H automobile project was initiated into the program. The project is available to 4-H members 14 years old and older and designed to teach them how the automobile should be handled on the road and costs involved. Thompson stated the 4-H program is not designed 10 duplicate the high school driver education course, only to supplement it. He pointed out that some high schools in the county do not offer the driver education course. To get a sound automotive program started, Thompson said that many people were involved in the initial planning meeting. This included adult 4-H leaders, insurance agents, auto dealers, law enforcement officers, tire and lubricant dealers, and county and state 4-H agents. After several hours of planning the program got underway last week at the Sheboygan, Vocational School and at Adell and Sheboygan Falls., The program includes two units, "The Car and the Highway," and "Maintenance and Operation." According to Thompson, the program has three meetings going on at the same time, on the same date, requiring a great deal of man and woman power.
Four-H adult leaders who helped plan the program and are responsible for the meetings are George Kalmerton, Marvin Kroeplien and Carlen Sebald, Sheboygan Falls; Mrs. Wayne Keyes and Mrs. Kenneth Reilly, Plymouth: Howard Mentink, Waldo; Elwood Meyer, Cedar Grove; Mrs. Milton Sanders, Sheboygan; Glyndon Soehner, Adell," and Ray'Weinhold, Random Lake.
Because the automobile "plays such an important part in our way of life, Thompson stated, "we are using resource people who have the skills and knowledge of the subject being discussed at a particular meeting serving as instructors." The resource committee consists of Rodney Behlow, Heinie Brunschmid, Fred Godemaa, Don Herzfeldt, Ervin Nack, Ray Endlich, Burdette Schuldt and Willard Zolltheis.
"The impact of the automobile age upon our lives makes it important that educational opportunities such as the 4-K automotive program be made available to our youth," Thompson said. About 50 club members are taking advantage of the 4-H automotive program.
