An early morning fire Monday destroyed the farm home of Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Olson, Route 2, Loyal. Loyal firemen responded to a call about 6 a.m. in 25 below zero temperatures to extinguish a blaze at the Olson farm, located about four miles south of town on Highway K.

The fire was discovered in the garage attached to the home. While flames had destroyed the garage and heavy damage had been inflicted on the kitchen addition, foremen were confident the main portion of the house could be saved.

Mother Nature apparently had other ideas, as ice former in the fire truck pump. Without water, the firemen and neighbors could only watch as flames ate into the two-story home, destroying it and all its contents. Only a few personal items were saved.

The Olsons and their three children escaped without harm and are now living in the former Ervin Dux farm home, just a short distance away.

For several years the Greenwood FBLA chapter has helped sponsor a walkathon in the spring to raise money for the March of Dimers. This past year approximately $7,000 was raised in Clark County for the March of Dimers. The money is used to run new-born centers (such as Marshfield); to develop educational materials; and to research new methods of treating birth defects.

The result of one of these education projects is called the PEP Kit. PEP stands for Pre-parenthood Education Program. This kit is designed to help all teenage girls learn good nutrition and health care for themselves and their unborn babies. It also explores the emotional and physical aspects of pregnancy.

The Pre-parenthood Education program consists of the following items: two facts books on diet and body changes; two comic type books to reinforce these facts books; thirty information cards which extend and confirm the facts books materials; a five foot wall chart depicting the month by month fetus development, as well as the physical, nutritional, and emotional health of the mother; nine diet cards to coordinate with the chart; and three wall poster highlighting suggestions for good health.

Greenwood FBLA, through the March of Dimes, has obtained one of these PEP Kits for Greenwood High School. The Kit will be house in the Home Economics Department, and will be used in such classes as Child Care; Dating, Marriage and Family Living; and Meal Management.
