Lester was born Oct. 29, 1912, in the town of Unity, Clark County to Carl and Ida (Frankie) Ewert. At the age of 4, he moved with his parents to the village of Unity. He attended 12 years of school and graduated from Unity High School. After his father died in 1932, he and his mother moved to his half-brother's farm. He later purchased the farm and lived there until 1969.
On June 5, 1934, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Unity, Lester was united in holy marriage to the former Nettie Tibbits, daughter of Leonard and Cora Tibbits of Trout Creek, Mich. Lester and Nettie lived on a farm southeast of Unity until 1969 when they moved to Marshfield were he worked as a carpenter until he retired in 1977. In 2002 the couple moved to the Angeles Retirement Community. They were married for 72 years until Nettie passed away Dec. 16, 2006. Lester was a longtime active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Unity until his health failed. He served on the church council as well as multiple terms on the Unity School Board. Many of Lester's relatives and friends remember him as the person who built things in bottles. As a teenager he was intrigued seeing a ship in a bottle. Over his life time he created a set of tools to build various items in bottles such as a saw mill, sleigh full of logs, buildings, windmills, animals, cars, trucks, busses, and three floor buildings with furniture. Hundreds of bottles were created by Lester and all were highly prized by anyone lucky enough to receive one. Lester enjoyed hunting and fishing when he was able to participate. He was always ready for a game of cards.
Lester is survived by two sons, Calvin (Romelle) Ewert of Rhinelander and Clair (Audrey) Ewert, of Rochester, Minn.; 8 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
His parents and all of his siblings preceded Lester in death.
Those wishing to provide a gift of remembrance in Mr. Ewert's memory are encouraged to do so to Trinity Lutheran Church in Unity.
