Reyer, Edward G. (6 June 1886 - 22 July 1956)

Edward G. Reyer, a resident of Colby the past 12 years, passed away early Sunday morning, July 22, at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield. He is a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Adam Reyer and was born in Colby, Wisconsin on June 6, 1886. He was not married.

Funeral services were conducted at the Lulloff Funeral Home in Colby Wednesday afternoon by Colby Lodge No. 204 F. & A.M. Rev. Roger B. Knutsen, pastor of the Methodist church, officiated at the church services and Sherman L. Loos officiated at the Masonic rites. Pall bearers were C. A. Nelsen, Robert Hopkins, Gust Brehm, Harold Klessig, Henry Aderhold and Frank Goeltz, Sr.

Surviving brothers and sisters are Mrs. Rose Oncken of Colby, Mrs. Fred Distelhorst of Madison, Hugo Reyer of Chevy Chase, Maryland, Harold Reyer of Wauwatosa, Otis Reyer of Baerington, Ill., Mrs. Morris Rein of Wittenberg and Richard Reyer of Park Falls. Three brothers, Olive Reyer, Will C. Reyer and Carl Reyer preceded him in death.

Mr. Reyer had many friends here who will miss his friendly greetings. He was well-known for his congenial disposition and his custom to perform all his duties honestly, conscientiously and well.

Ed Reyer was born in the town of Hull, Colby, Wisconsin, on June 6, 1886, and passed away on July 22, 1956, at the age of 70 years. A heart ailment was the cause of death. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Adam Reyer, one of the pioneer families of Colby, Wis. He was one of a family of eleven children, seven of whom who survive him, namely, Mrs. Rose Oncken of Colby, Mrs. Fred Distelhorst (Emma) of Madison, Hugo Reyer of Chevy Chase, Maryland, Harold Reyer of Wauwatosa, Mrs. Morris Rein (Madeline) of Wittenburg, Otis Reyer of Barrington, Illinois, and Richard Reyer of Park Falls.

His parents and two brothers, Carl and Will, and one sister, Olive, preceded him in death.

After Ed graduated from the Colby High School in 1905, he taught country school for one year near Athens, Wisconsin, in the Brehm School District. In 1906 he entered the Stevens Point Normal and graduated in 1908. The following year he was principal of the Pittsville High School. In the fall of 1910 he entered the University of Wisconsin School of Commerce. In 1912 he graduated with scholastic honor of Phi Beta Kappa. This was remarkable in view of the fact that he only attended the University for two years, having taken his first two years of college at Stevens Point Normal.

After Ed graduated from the University, he worked for the Wisconsin Public Service Commission, specializing in public utility accounting. After a few years in this position he worked for Arthur H. Anderson & Company, certified public accountants. Mr. Reyer’s exceptional abilities and their management was recognized by Mr. Ralph Beaton of Columbus, Ohio, hence, in 1925, Mr. Reyer became associated with Mr. Beaton in business. They acquired small gas and electric companies in Ohio and Indiana, and placed them on an efficient operating basis. These properties were taken over by a larger utility company in 1938, and in this same year Ed retired from active participation in business, and devoted all his time to his personal financial affairs.

Being single, Ed spent the first few years of his retirement with relatives and friends at Madison, Wisconsin. He came back to Colby 12 years ago to take care of his parents during their last illness, and to live near the scene of his boyhood activities, and to be with his many friends of his early life.

Ed’s hobby was to have a nice garden, and his avocation was to fish. His fishing jaunts took him to Northern Wisconsin, Northern Minnesota, and he made many trips to the wilds of Canada.

Ed Reyer was a member of the Elk Lodge of Terre Haute, Indiana. He was also a member of the Ravenswood Lodge 777 A.F.A.M. Chicago, and of Illinois Commandery No. 72 Knights Templar Chicago. He was a 32nd degree Mason.

Ed always exemplified the highest characteristics of honesty and uprightness, and will long be remembered by his relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were conducted by Colby Lodge 204 F&A.M. and Rev. Roger Knutsen, at 2 P.M. July 25, 1956 from Luloff’s Funeral Home with internment at the Colby (Colby, Clark Co. Wis.) Cemetery.

The pallbearers were Frank Goeltz, C. A. Nelsen, Henry Aderhold, Robert Hopkins, Gust Brehm and Harold Klessig.
