Colby, Wis. -- Troy A. Schmitt, 37, of Colby, died Oct. 17, 2008, at Auburndale.

Tentative services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Colby, Wis. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21, and from 9:30 a.m. until service time Wednesday, both at the church. A full obituary will be printed in the News-Herald on Monday.

Maurina-Schilling Funeral Home of Abbotsford is assisting the family.

Colby, Wis. -- Troy A. Schmitt, 37, of Colby, died Friday, Oct. 17, 2008, in the town of Auburndale in Wood County as a result of a minivan and train collision.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2008, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Colby, Wis. The Rev. Anandran Rajendran will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery in the town of Colby, Wis. Visitation will be held Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2008 from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the church in Colby and again Wednesday at the church from 9:30 a.m. until time of service. There will be a rosary service at 6:30 p.m. at the church in Colby led by Troy's children and his nieces and nephews. Acting as his pallbearers will be Todd, Thad, Trent, Tony, T-Jay, Tate and Terry Schmitt.

Troy was born Aug. 3, 1971, in Park Ridge, Ill., to Timothy and Suzie (Kopp) Schmitt. He and his family moved to the Auburndale area, where he graduated from Auburndale Senior High School in 1989. Troy continued his education by attending the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, where he received his Bachelor of Science Degree in education in 1996. He was currently working on his masters degree at UW-Stout.

Troy married the love of his life and best friend, Ann Luther on Nov. 9, 1996, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Colby, Wis. Presently, Troy was working as a teacher at Marshfield Senior High where he taught Government and AP Government. He took great pride in his teaching profession at Marshfield Senior High. Troy enjoyed more than anything spending time with his wife and children. He loved to play with his kids and make them laugh. He enjoyed hosting bonfire gatherings with family and friends. He loved baking homemade bread, cooking on the grill, horseback riding as well as biking and jogging with his boys.

Troy was a true sports enthusiast, enjoying golfing and playing basketball and softball with his friends. For those who knew him, Troy was ambitious, energetic and a dedicated man in everything he set out to do. He was passionate about politics and loved a good debate. Troy loved working alongside his father, Tim, doing carpentry work around his home. Troy had a great sense of humor and was always up for a good practical joke.

Troy was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, a member of the parish council and was a lector for the church. He also was part of the Pre-Cana Marriage Preparation, where he and his wife served as instructors. He also taught CCD for many years for St. Mary's. Other areas where Troy gave of his time include working the summer months with his cousins doing building projects, Tee-ball coach, Reader and Supervisor of the National AP-GAP exam and a consultant for the AP-GAP at UW-Madison's Summer Institute.

Troy is lovingly survived by his wife Ann; and his children, Samuel (9), Alexander (8), Henry (6), Elijah (3), and Annamarie (11 months) all of Colby, Wis. He is also survived by his parents, Timothy and Suzie Schmitt of Curtiss; and his siblings, Jodi (Wayne) Linzmeier of Auburndale, Todd (Sherry) Schmitt of Plover, Thad (Shannah) Schmitt of East Troy, Trent (Heather) Schmitt of Milladore, Tony (Janell) Schmitt of Milladore, T-Jay Schmitt of Cottage Grove, Anna (Dan) Linzmeier of Marshfield and Tate (Dana) Schmitt, also of Marshfield. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and many wonderful family and friends.

Troy is preceded in death by a sister, Tina Rose Schmitt; and his grandparents, Gertrude and Alphonse Schmitt and Harry Kopp.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made towards a college savings fund for Troy's children.

The Maurina-Schilling Funeral Home of Abbotsford is assisting Troy's family with all arrangements.

He is survived by a maternal grandmother, Rosie Kopp, Abbotsford; and a brother, T-Jay (special friend Christy) Schmitt, Madison.
