JANESVILLE - Hazel M. (Smith) Seavert, age 89, formerly of Evansville, died Sunday, June 4, 2006, at Cedar Crest, where she had resided for the past few years. She was born in Idana, Clay County, Kan., on Aug. 20, 1916, the daughter of George Henry and Lucia Lucretia (Beaty) Robinson. Soon after her birth, her family moved to Clark County, Wis., where she grew and attended school. Some years later her family moved to a farm near Newville, Rock County.

Hazel met her future husband, Homer Irvin Smith, there and married him on Aug. 25, 1934, in Rockford, Ill. To this marriage was born a son, Duane Irvin, and a daughter, Lois Marlene. Her family lived in and around Janesville. Hazel spent nearly 50 years waitressing, and she worked many years for Adamany's Confectionary where she made candy and served the patrons that fondly called her "Mom." Her husband, Homer, passed away on April 16, 1959. In 1960, she met John Warner Seavert and married him on Oct. 29, 1960, and helped raise his sons, Robert and Charles on a farm in the Evansville area. She worked as a waitress at the Village Square in Evansville until she retired. John passed away on June 29, 1999. Hazel loved growing all types of roses, especially Hybrid Tea Roses and African Violets. Hazel loved to play cards and travel. She and both her husbands loved old time dances at Cliff Lodge in Indianford and Turner Hall in Monroe.

Hazel is survived by two children, Duane I. (Leona) Smith of Madison, and Lois (William) McKinney of Janesville; two stepsons, Robert (Ann) Seavert of Madison, and Charles (Sally) Seavert of Evansville; eight grandchildren, Mark McKinney and Nicholas (Cheryl) Smith, both of Janesville, Timothy (Robin) Smith and Jason Smith, both of Beloit, Raymond (Robin) Seavert of Brodhead, Randy Seavert of Evansville, David Gratzl and Eric Jerdee, both of Madison; five great-grandchildren, Aaron McKinney, Nichole Smith, Stephanie Smith, Ashley Smith and Marcus Smith; three step-great-grandchildren; a sister, Pearl Garey of Edgerton; nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. Besides her parents and both husbands, Hazel was preceded in death by a sister, Leona Pastorius; a brother, Arnold L. Robinson; and a nephew, Gerald Pastorius.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 7, 2006, at Asbury United Methodist Church, 1810 Kellogg Ave., with the Rev. Ann Spindt presiding. Burial will be in Milton Lawns Memorial Park. Friends may call from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Wednesday at the church. Schneider Apfel Schneider & Schneider Funeral Home is serving the family.
