Power, Frances (15 OCT 1949)

St. John’s, Newfoundland-Fort Pepperrell Air Force Chapel, St. John’s, Newfoundland, gaily displayed a profusion of autumn colors and flowers to suit the happy occasion when on Oct. 15, 1949, friends and relatives gathered to witness the couple ring ceremony which unit in matrimony Miss Frances Power of this city, to Sgt. Raymond Patchak of the United States Air Force.

The bride, entering the Chapel on the arm of her father, Mr. Michael F. Power, well known contactor of that city, looked radiantly lovely in traditional white satin. Her gown, cut on graceful flowing lines, was of duchess slipper satin, with bustle drape at the back, and décolleté neckline, with lace inserts and long sleeves. Her veil was fingertip length, caught with a coronet of seed pearls, and had a wide border of Alecon lace. She carried a bouquet of American Beauty roses, which gave a vivid touch of color to the ensemble. Her bridesmaid and sister, Miss Laura Power, was very pretty in lavender blue, with matching headdress, her veil was shoulder length, her bouquet pink carnations.

Chaplain (Capt. Lechner) officiated at the ceremony and Mrs. Nicholson (wife of Command Chaplain) at the organ, gave renditions of the traditional marriage accompaniments.

Corp. Leonard J. Podliska, close friend of the groom, ably performed the duties of best man.

Leaving the Chapel the newlyweds, accompanied by approximately fifty friends and relatives proceeded to Smithville, Newfoundland, where the reception was held. After a delightful supper, served by the Misses Furlong, the usual toasts were honored, Chaplain Lechner responding very suitably and aptly to a toast to the bride and groom. Toastmaster for the occasion was Mr. Hubert Hickey, who carried out his duties most admirably. Mr. James Gibbs, K.C., and Mrs. Gibbs were among the guests. Mr. Gibbs proposed a toast to the parents of the young couple, which was responded to by Insp. J. Walsh, on behalf of Mr. and Mrs. Power. Unfortunately the parents of the groom were unable to be present, but the groom, Sgt. Patchak, referred to the fact that it was his parents thirtieth wedding anniversary as well as his wedding day.

Supper and toasts dispersed with, the party then continued with dancing and singing to the music of Harold LaFosse’s Orchestra. The first dance was a solo, as bride and groom danced to the strains of the Wedding March. Next came the anniversary song, on honor of Mr. and Mrs. Derm Shea (Mrs. Shea is a sister of the bride) who were celebrating their fourth wedding anniversary. This was also played in honor of the absentee parents of the groom, Mr. and Mrs. Albert C. Patchak of Cadott, Wis., who were celebrating their thirtieth wedding anniversary in the U.S.A.

The bride’s step-mother, Mrs. Stella Power, chose burgundy with grey accessories for the occasion.

At the close of the very enjoyable evening, Mr. and Mrs. Patchak left for Holyrood, where the young couple planned to spend part of their honeymoon. The bride, for her going away ensemble, chose a tailored suit in dark beige cavalry twill, with a very chic hat of black satin, with gold trimming. Her corsage of yellow carnations, gave the finishing touch to the very smart ensemble.

The best man was presented with a gift of a gold tie pin, the bridesmaid with dainty rhinestone earrings. The groom presented his bride with a silver tea service. Many good wishes for a happy life together are extended to the young couple, who now reside at 175 LeMarchant Road, St. John’s, Newfoundland.
