Vandehey, James C. (9 Dec. 1916 - 14 Jan. 2009)

James C. Vandehey, 92, of Abbotsford, Wisconsin, died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2009, at Saint Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 19, 2009, at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Abbotsford, Wis.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 18, 2009, at Maurina-Schilling Funeral Home in Abbotsford, with a 7 p.m. parish rosary service. Visitation will also be held from 10 a.m. until service time Monday at the church.

He was born to James and Nora (Kennedy) Vandehey on Dec. 9, 1916. He attended Elmwood Elementary School in the town of Green Grove and graduated from Abbotsford High School where he was a member of the 1935 state basketball team. He received a B.S. degree from Eau Claire State Teacher's College (now University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire) and a master's degree from UW-Madison. He also did post-graduate work at the University of Minnesota and several other Midwestern universities.

He served in World War II and in the Pacific Theater as a Captain in the Air Force.

During his career, Jim taught high school math at Oakfield, Kaukauna, Baraboo and Muskego high schools.

Survivors include 18 nieces and nephews and their children.

James C. Vandehey, 92, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2009, at Saint Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Maurina- Schilling Funeral Home in Abbotsford on Sunday, Jan. 18, 2009, and at church and Monday one hour before services. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Abbotsford on Monday, Jan. 19, 2009, at 11 a.m. The Rev. Benjamin Franklin will officiate. A Parish Rosary service will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home in Abbotsford, Wis.

Jim was born to James and Nora (Kennedy) Vandehey on Dec. 9, 1916. After his retirement, Jim made his home in Abbotsford with Nomi and Noel Schelling his sister and brother-in-law.

Jim's hobbies were competitive sports, reading, gardening and theater.

He belonged to several professional organizations while teaching and currently was a member of MARTA (Marshfield Area Retired Teachers Association) and is a member of St. Bernard's Catholic Church.

Survivors include 18 loving nieces and nephews and their children. He is preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and five sisters.

The family wishes to extend a special thank you to the staff of Continental Manor of Abbotsford and the Palliative Care Unit at Marshfield, Wisconsin Hospital and Colby Retirement Center.
