Bernt, Herbert E. (24 Apr. 1929 - 15 Jan. 2009)

Herbert E. Bernt, 79, passed away peacefully at his home in Abbotsford on Jan. 15, 2009. Visitation will be at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Milan on Monday, Jan. 19 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. A funeral service will take place at 3 p.m. at the church. The Rev. Matthew Christians will officiate. Burial will take place in Milan Cemetery following the service. Acting as his pallbearers are Chad Bernt, Ryan Burnt, Joshua Burnt, Kraig Underwood, Kevin Underwood and Dalton Schreiner.

On April 24, 1929, Herbert was born to Hermann and Barbara Bernt in Czechoslovakia. After he moved to Germany, he met and married Marie Held. In 1954, Herbert and Marie moved their family to the United States. For 30 years, he was employed by Berg Equipment in Marshfield as a tool and die maker. Herbert enjoyed wood working, German music and watching game shows on television.

Herbert is lovingly survived by his wife Marie and his three children Helmet (Janet) Bernt of Abbotsford, Brigitte (Virgil) Underwood of Athens and Walter Bernt of Abbotsford, Wis. He is further survived by 11 grandchildren Tammy, Tracy, Kim, Kevin, Kraig, Chad, Ryan, Amanda, Joshua, Nicole, Deven and 14 great-grandchildren, also by four sisters Rosa, Maria, Anneliese of Germany, and Hilda of Florida. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

The Maurina-Schilling Funeral Home of Abbotsford is assisting Herbert's family with funeral arrangements.
