Stauner, John J. (1 June 1923 - 2 Feb. 2000)

WILLARD - John J. Stauner, age 77, Town of Mead, died Friday, Feb. 2, 2001, at his home on Mead Lake.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2001, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Willard with Father Joseph Follmar officiating. Burial will follow in the Willard Cemetery with full military rites conducted by the Wallis Hinker American Legion Post 238 of Greenwood. Pallbearers will be Ben Riker, Terra Schultz, Quentin Denzine, Joel Ovyn, Mike Vetterkind and Terrie Bena.

Visitation will be held today at Holy Family Catholic Church from 10 a.m. until time of services at 11 a.m.

John Joseph Stauner was born June 1, 1923, in the Town of Medford to Joseph and Susan (nee Kellner) Stauner. He attended Holy Rosary School in Medford. John served 11 years in the U.S. Army during and after World War II. During the war he served in Africa, Sicily, Italy and Austria. After the war he served in the South Pacific and at various bases in the United States. His marriage to Margaret Klemm, who survives, took place on May 28, 1953, at Whittlesey. They farmed in the township of Greenwood in Taylor County for seven years. In 1962 they moved to Marshfield where John was employed at Weyerhaeuser. He retired in 1985 after 23 years. John and Margaret have resided at Mead Lake since his retirement.

John was a member of the Wallis Hinker American Legion Post 238 in Greenwood. In 1999 his family honored his military service with the placement of a legacy stone at the Highground Memorial in Neillsville. John enjoyed many outdoor activities including gardening and fishing. He was an avid Packer fan for over 60 years. He took special pride in the achievements of his children and grandchildren.

John is survived by his wife, Margaret, of Mead Lake; one daughter, Mary (Terry) Schultz of Withee two sons, Robert (Rose) Stauner of Huntsville, Ala., and John (Nora) Stauner of Wisconsin Rapids; his grandchildren, Joline Moorman and Brian Stauner of Alabama, Stephanie (Quentin) Denzine, Cindy Schultz, and Terra Schultz of Medford, Benjamin Riker, Chris Stauner, and Sarah Stauner of Wiscosin Rapids. In addition John has four great grandchildren, six sisters, Minnie Reynolds of Baraga, Mich., Agnes (Ray) Carstenson of Medford, Catherine Dassow of Whittlesey, Christy (Manny) Gilles of Medford, Mary (Ervin) Dassow of Medford, and Theresa Koutrelakos of Winthrop, Maine and one brother, Alvin (Lillian) Stauner of Medford.

He was preceded in death by one great grandson, Gunner Denzine, one sister, Florence Broeske and four brothers, Joseph, Lawrence, Herbert, and Albert, and two more brothers in infancy.

Cuddie Funeral Home of Greenwood is assisting the family with arrangements.
