Earlman Rogers Hatch was born on 21 September 1821 in Broome County, New York, the son of Elijah and Phebe (Rogers) Hatch. In 1847 the family migrated to Addison, Washington County, Wisconsin.

In 1849 Earlman was married to Sally Ashley of Lisle, Broome County, New York. Sally and Earlman resided in Kankakee, Illinois, where Earlman was a carpenter, along with his brother Simon. Sally and Earlman were the parents of 2 daughters, Alleda, born 11 November 1850 (Alleda later married Sereno Wren, of Neillsville) and Florella Jane born 22 October 1853. (Florella later married John R. Hand of Clark County, Wisconsin). Sally died on 13 December 1854 in Kankakee, and Earlman returned to Washington County, Wisconsin.

Lucina Wendell was born in Fort Plain, New York 20 March 1830, the daughter of Jacob Wendell and Nancy Fox Gould. On 29 November 1830, Lucina married Horatio Gates Vunk, and the young couple migrated to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Their son, Frederick Horatio Vunk, was born there on 4 March 1854. In 1854 Horatio died, leaving Lucina a young widow with a small child. She moved to Addison, Washington County, Wisconsin, where she and Earlman met. They were married 4 November 1855 in Cedar Creek, Washington County, Wisconsin, combining their 2 families. They were to become the parents of 7 more children:

Frances Viola (Frankie) who married Adelbert Sprague, of Clark County, Wisconsin; Ida Estelle, who married John Kennedy, of Clark County, Wisconsin; Leona Idella, who married first, Fay Draper of Clark County, Wisconsin, and second, Joel Adalaska Pound of Arlington, Oregon; Earl Wendell, who married Amy Clarinda Becker, George Washington, who died as an infant, Ernest Duane, who married Maude Johnson, and Charles Elmer.

On September 23, 1864, Earlman was drafted into the Union Army. He served as a private in the 25th Wisconsin Infantry, Co. K during the Civil War. He was in General Sherman’s Army in North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Georgia during Sherman’s March to the Sea. He was discharged on June 15, 1865 and returned to his home in Roaring Creek, Jackson County, Wisconsin. During his absence, Lucina tended to the business of taking care of the farm and raising their first 7 children.

Following the war the family resided in Pine Valley and Neillsville, Clark County, Wisconsin, where he was a farmer.

Lucina died in Neillsville on 25 December 1881, age 51 years, and was buried in the Neillsville City Cemetery, Neillsville. After Lucina’s death, Earlman moved with his 3 young sons to Columbus, Klickitat County, Washington to be near his other children, they having moved there previously.

Earlman died on 22 December 1894 at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Leona Idella and Joel Pound in Arlington, Oregon. He was buried in Langer Cemetery, Chapman Creek, Sundale, in Klickitat County, Washington.
