Westbay, Philenus Leander, Sr. (11 December 1897 - 14 January 1971)

Philenus Leander Westbay, Sr., 73, of Greenwood died last Thursday at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield, where he was admitted January 7, as a surgical patient.

Mr. Westbay, son of Leander W. and Jerusha (Williams) Westbay, was born December 11, 1897, in Crown Point, Ind. He was married to Anna Marie Vitoux, November 11, 1919, in Valparaiso, Ind. He received his education in Indiana. He came to Greenwood and has resided on the present farm four miles north in the Town of Warner. He was a member of the Wallis-Hinker legion Post, No. 238, which conducted military graveside rites.

Surviving are his wife; five daughters, Mrs. Anna Marie Stratton, Mrs. Byron (Nancy) Garlach and Mrs. Pauline Slingerland, all of Greenwood, Mrs. Ernest (Edna Evert of Valparaiso, Ind., and Mrs. Richard (Irene) Carlberg of Hebron, Ind.; and a son, Philenus L. Westbay, Jr. of Greenwood; 33 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Alice Swanson of Valparaiso, Ind.

Funeral services were held Sunday from the Hill Funeral Home in Greenwood. The Rev. Eugene Antrim, pastor of Grace United Methodist Church, officiated. Burial was made in the Greenwood Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Richard Stratton, Phillip Stratton, Richard Carlberg, Robert Slingerland, David Evert, and John Evert. Honorary pallbearers were Steven Slingerland, William Slingerland, Thomas Stratton, Daniel Stratton and Aaron Carlberg. Gary Schultz sang, “The Old Rugged Cross” and “In the Garden” accompanied on the organ by Mrs. Gary Schultz.

Relatives from away who attended were Mrs. Goodwin Westbay and three daughters, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Ketchmark, Burns Whittaker, Mrs. William Swanson, David Evert, Mr. and Mrs. John Evert, Mr. and Mrs. Charles merle, Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Austin, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Stratton, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Gee, all of Valparaiso, Ind.; Mr. and Mrs. Richard Carlberg and family, Hebron, Ind.; Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Stratton, Chicago Heights, Ill.; Robert Slingerland of Utah; Steven Slingerland of California and Mrs. Edward Wolfgang of Tonawanda, N. Y.
