Red Cloud, Nellie (1951)

Mrs. Red Cloud and her son Merlin are now at this old family home in the Hatfield area. They have come back to it after spending the winter with relatives at Friendship. (Very poor photo in the copy)

The return to the quiet of the woodsy surroundings of this old home is in great contrast to their recent experience. Last honor paid to the hero son of Mrs. Red loud, Cpl. Mitchell Red Cloud, was a commemorative service held at Black River Falls, with the entire community turning out to honor the brave Winnebago boy. Participating in the parade was a company of troops from Camp McCoy and the post band. Prior to that Mrs. Red Cloud had received at the pentagon the Congressional Medal of Honor post-humously awarded to her son.

The home (shown in the poor photo copy) has long been in the Winneshek family; Mrs. Red Cloud being a daughter of old Chief Winneshek.
