(Follow on in 3/17/1949 Owen Enterprise)

John F. Hughes was born in Newton Falls, Ohio, on the 11th day of November 1866. As a young man there he attended the public school system and the University of Wooster, Ohio, and later a business college at Oswego, N.Y.

As a young man he journeyed to Big Rapids, Mich., where he became engaged in the retail shoe business. On Jan. 5th, 1898, at Ludington, Mich., he was united in marriage to Emmaretta Caswell, returning to Big Rapids, Mich., where they enjoyed one year before coming to Owen over 50 years ago, being employed as a lumber sales manager with the John S. Owen Lumber Co. He was continually associated with the firm and the lumbering industry until his retirement 14 years ago.

As a resident and citizen of this community for the past 50 years Mr. Hughes had gained the self respect of everyone. An active Christian and church member, he also served the community as a civil leader during its pioneer days. He was the first secretary of the community’s first Commercial club which was formed in 1910. He had been especially active in Masonic circles for 55 years, having held every chair of office in the lodge.

Since his retirement he was able to enjoy quite a measure of life in traveling and ease. Although his health had not been too good throughout the winter months he was able to be about town daily until a week ago Wednesday, March 2nd, when he was admitted to St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield, for treatment. He passed away on Tuesday, March 8th, 1949.

Masonic rites were conducted by the Owen lodge, of which he was a charter member, at one o’clock Friday, March 12th, from the Griebenow Funeral Home (Owen, Wisconsin) with Dr. K. O. Crosby and Rev. Myron W. Glick officiating. Graveside services were conducted at Newton Falls, Ohio.

Surviving him are his wife, a nephew, Alfred Griffith of Newton Falls, Ohio; and Niece, Ethel Griffith of Warren, Ohio.

Among those here from away for the services were his nephew and Mrs. Hughes sister, Mrs. Frances C. Hanna, of Ludington, Mich.
