Murphy, Dean V. (21 June 1922 - 16 Mar. 2009)

MARSHALL, Ill. -- Dean V. Murphy, 86, of Marshall, Ill., died March 16, 2009, at Greenwood Health & Living in Greenwood, Ind.

Burial will take place at 10 a.m. Monday, March 23, 2009, at the Willard Cemetery in Willard, Wis. Military rites will be conducted by the Greenwood American Legion Post No. 238.

Dean Verlin Murphy was born June 21, 1922, in Marshall, Ill., the son of Leary and Orpha May (Martin) Murphy. He served in the U.S. Navy for five years, from 1942 until 1947, when he was discharged with the rank of Aviation Chief Machinist's Mate.

He was united in marriage to Frances Herrick on Oct. 18, 1947, in Peoria, Ill. She preceded him in death Nov. 23, 2006.

His teaching career began in New Boston, Ill., and Orion, Ill., where he was also football coach. In 1954, he returned to Marshall, Ill., where he taught and served for three years as principal of Marshall Junior High. He later served as principal at the high school in Herscher, Ill., for nine years, before retiring in 1977 and moving back to Marshall.

He is survived by two daughters, Lorrie (Al) Chapman of Greenwood, Ind., and Sheila Robinson of Martinsville, Ill.; a son, Bob (Carolyn) Murphy of Martinsville, Ill.; a sister, Virgie Pearce of Marshall, Ill.; seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Cuddie Funeral Home of Greenwood and Pearce Funeral Home of Marshall, Ill., are assisting the family with arrangements.
