Merkley, John (4 Dec. 1874 - 24 May 1942)

John Merkely, 67, of Colby, died Monday morning of injuries suffered when he was struck by an automobile on Highway 13 in Colby Saturday afternoon at 1:15 p.m.

Merkley, a pedestrian, was struck down at the same place where Clayton Johnson, another elderly resident of Colby, was killed May 11.

The elderly man was crossing the highway near the Edward Witte service station. After waiting for a south bound car to pass he stepped directly in the path of one going north.

He suffered a skull fracture, compound fracture of the right leg and multiple contusions. He was taken to the Colby clinic for first aid and then to St. Joseph’s hospital, Marshfield, where he died Monday.
