Morley, Bert (8 NOV 1880 - 29 SEP 1950)

One of the city’s pioneer residents, Bert Morley, passed away suddenly Friday afternoon at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield. He had complained of feeling weak about ten days previous to his death and had gone to Eau Claire for a physical check up. There physinicans told him to give up his work and take it easy. Returning home he felt good until becoming extremely ill on Wednesday at which time he was rushed to the hospital where he died two days later.

Funeral services were conducted on Monday afternoon at two o’clock from the Griebenow Funeral Parlors with Rev. W. Myron Glick officiating. Burial was made in Riverside Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Jack Parker, Gus Braun, Henry Gust, Ben Bruchert, Roy Gabriel and Richard Rabska.

The deceased was born on Nov. 8, 1880 at Sparta, Wis. After coming to this community as a young man he became actively engaged in civic affairs and instrumental in the community’s expansion. For many years he owned and operated a store in the Fourth Ward of the city. Several years ago he sold that business and had been employed at the E. W. Kidd Co. For the past 11 years he had served as the city’s assessor. He was a member of the Owen Common Council when it became a city 25 years ago. In 1923 he was elected to the village board and served as a board member until April of 1926.

His passing is mourned to his widow in addition to a wide circle of friends and business associates in this community, whom he had gained the respect of.
