Fredericks, Gustave (1871? - 17 JAN 1951)

Gust Fredericks, 79, route 1, Owen (Clark Co., Wis.), died at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield, at 6:10 yesterday morning, six and one-half hours after he had been struck by a car driven by Harlan Hardrath, 31, route 1, Owen.

The fatality is Clark County’s first highway death of 1951.

According to information obtained by investigating officer, Capt. Wm. Nelson of the Clark County Traffic Department, Mr. Fredericks was walking home at about 11:30 Wednesday p.m. after having been at the home of a neighbor visiting. He was walking west and on the right had side of the town road in the Town of Green Grove, four miles east and two miles south of Owen. Upon seeing a car approaching him from the rear, also traveling in a westerly direction, he decided to cross the roadway so as to be walking on the left hand side of the highway. Harlan Hardrath, driver of the car, told Officer Nelson that he attempted to avoid striking Mr. Fredericks and in doing so his car went into the ditch, but even at that he couldn’t avoid hitting him.

Dr. Lehmer of Colby was called to treat the injured man and then he was rushed to the hospital in Griebenow Company’s ambulance. He passed away at 6:10 yesterday morning.

Wednesday, coroner John Bergmann and Undersheriff, Ray Kutsche, Neillsville, along with Officer Nelson, conducted an investigation of the accident. Afterwards Coroner Bergmann stated there wouldn’t be an inquest.
