Jalling, John E. (31 Jan. 1914 - 14 Nov. 1998)

WITHEE - John E. Jalling, 84, Withee, died at 1:10 a.m. Nov. 14, 1998, at the Clark County Health Care Center hospice in Owen.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Nazareth Lutheran Church in Withee will full military rites provided by the Colby Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Owen American Legion Club. The Rev. Paul Petersen will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today at Maurina Funeral Home in Owen.

Mr. Jalling was born Jan. 31, 1914, in Withee, the son of John and Neisina (nee Nelsen) Jalling. He was a 1932 graduate of Withee High School. John and the former Viola Blunck were united in marriage on March 21, 1941, at St. John’s Lutheran Church.

John honorably served his country during World War II, serving in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1945, participating in the Normandy invasion. He was a member of the 32nd Evacuation Hospital and assisted medical officers in surgery.

He owned and operated Jalling’s family grocery store in Withee for 26 years and later worked for American Family as an insurance agent for many years. In 1970 John purchased the 11th Frame Bowling Alley, and later added the restaurant facilities. Jim and Barb Hansen purchased the business in 1977, and Mr. Jalling returned to insurance sales until his retirement.

He was a charter member of the Withee Lions and served as their first president. He also was a 50-year member of the Owen-Withee American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a longtime member of Nazareth Lutheran Church where he held board offices.

In his early years, John was the leader of an eight-piece orchestra known as "Swing & Sway With Johnny J."

He will be sadly missed by his wife of 57 years, Viola "Vi" Jalling of Withee; a daughter, Linda (Ken) Clark of Withee; a son, John "Jack" (Ruth) Jalling of Chippewa Falls; six grandchildren, Scott Jalling, Rick Jalling, Michael Renderman, Mark Renderman, Daniel Renderman and Ryan Renderman; four step-grandchildren, Dawn Schuh, Kenneth Lynn, Penny Gehrke and Steve Clark; 10 great-grandchildren, Josh, Kayla and Julie Jalling, Jacob, Kate and Jenna Jalling, Rachel, Lance, Courtney and Kelly Renderman; and six step-great-grandchildren, Dustin and Dylan Schuh, Adrian Lynn, Nick Mohr, Sara Mohr and Jeffrey Mohr.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Henry Jalling, and three sisters, Margaret, Callia and Signa.
