Schemmer, A. L. Dr. (2 Aug. 1890 - 23 Aug. 1951)

 

COLBY, WIS. -- A solemn Requiem High Mass was read at the funeral services of Dr. A. L. Schemmer, 61, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church Monday morning. Dr. Schemmer died at his home Thursday evening of a heart attack. The Rev. N. B. Beschta, was the celebrant at the Mass with the Very Rev. Michael J. Kelnhofer, Dorchester, as deacon, and the Rev. Raymond Schultz, Abbotsford, as sub-deacon. The brother of the deceased, the Right Rev. Msgr. George A. Schemmer, New Holstein was also present in the sanctuary. The Rev. Basil Reuss, of St. Norbert’s College, De Pere, delivered the sermon.

 

Honorary pallbearers were Dr. W. A. Olson, Greenwood; Dr. F. P. Foley, Dorchester; Dr. A. P. Hable, Loyal; Dr. Dike, Owen; Dr. Robert Mason, Dr. R. S. Baldwin, Dr. Frank Broekman, Dr. A. L. Millard, Dr. Karl Doege, Dr. R. P. Potter, and Dr. F. J. Gouze, of Marshfield; Dr. Herman Schultz, Edgar; and Dr. H. T. Callahan, Spencer.

 

Active pallbearers were Anton X. Umhoefer, Amborse Steinwand, Frank Goeltz, Edward G. Reyer, Nathan L. Dessloch, and Harry Bender.

 

On Monday afternoon the body of the deceased was taken to New Holstein where it lay in state at Msgr. Schemmer’s rectory until Tuesday morning, when it was taken to church, where Msgr. Schemmer read a Requiem Mass. Burial was made in St. Mary’s cemetery in Chilton.

 

Dr. Schemmer was born Aug. 2, 1890, at Clintonville. A few years later he moved to Hilbert with his parents. His boyhood was spent in Chilton. When he graduated from Marquette University in 1913, he served as president of the senior class. Immediately after graduation he came to Colby, residing here since that time. His marriage to the former Gertrude Goessling took place in Milwaukee July 29, 1914.

 

The physician was a member of the American Medical Association, the American Academy of General Practitioners, and the State Gynecology and Obstetrical Society. At the time of his death, he was serving as health officer of the Town of Hull. He was also a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters, Colby, and the Medford Council of the Knights of Columbus.

 

At one time he served as president of the Clark County Medical Society.

 

Dr. Schemmer is survived by his widow; a son, John K., New York City; a grandson; a brother, the Rt. Rev. Msgr. George Schemmer, New Holstein; and two sisters, the Misses Josephine and Mary Schemmer, New Holstein.
