Marking John (25 JUL 1883 - 21 MAR 1954)

This community felt the sting of losing another of its affable and pioneer residents this week when John Marking, 70, a resident of this city (Owen, Clark Co., Wis.) for more than 40 years, passed away.  Death came to him quietly at the General Hospital in Madison early Sunday morning, March 21, 1954.  He had been admitted to the hospital for treatment and surgery earlier in the week.  His death came as a shock to the family as a physician’s report late Saturday night indicated he was making a satisfactory recovery since undergoing major surgery.

Funeral services were conducted at two o’clock Wednesday afternoon from Griebenow’s Funeral Home with Rev. Egge, pastor of Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Longwood officiating.  Burial was made at Riverside Cemetery.

Acting as pallbearers were Henry V. Anderson, Gus Braun, Reinhold Buss, Hans Hansen, Richard Rabska and Melvin Bjornstad.  In charge of the floral offerings were Mesdames Richard Rabska, Charles Pralguske, M. J. Krach, Hans Hansen, Charles Zivney and Carrier and Miss Arlie Hutchins.

The deceased was born on July 25, 1883 in Norway.  As a young man he came to this country, first settling in the vicinity of Stanley.  Here he met the former Martha Ness, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Martin Ness, whom he married and then moving to Owen where he was employed by the John S. Owen Lumber Co.  Throughout the many years he spent in this community he retained his association with the lumber business, having been employed in late years by the Frederick Post Manufacturing Corp.

John Marking was a devoted family man.  He enjoyed recalling how his home was always "open house" to his children and their friends and how he enjoyed them during many evenings spent in song fests.  The happiness of his home was shared only by his love for flowers and caring for them in the summer months.

Mourning his absence are his wife and the following children:  Theresa (Mrs. Reuben Powers), Prairie du Chien; Geneva (Mrs. Geo. Clarke), Pittsburgh, Pa.; Margaret (Mrs. Everett Compton), Chicago Heights, Ill.; Luverne (Mrs. Garvin Pusey), Canton, Ill.; Dorothy (Mrs. Herman Rabska), Withee; Gordon, Detroit, Mich.; Harriet (Mrs. Donald (Carrier), Edgerton; Eunice (Mrs. John Davison) Black River Falls; Beverly (Mrs. Lester Hansen), Withee.  Nine grandchildren also survive.

One son, John Jr., preceded him in death having lost his life by drowning in the Black River in 1938.
