Slowiak, Vincent Gabriel (20 April 1921 - 12 September 2009)

Vincent G. Slowiak, age 88, of Thorp, died at Our Lady of Victory Hospital, in Stanley, on Saturday, September 12, 2009.

Funeral Services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 16, 2009, at St. Bernard-St. Hedwig Catholic Church in Thorp. Fr. Keith Apfelbeck officiated and burial followed in New St. Hedwig’s Catholic Cemetery.  Visitation was held at Thorp Funeral Home on Tuesday, September 15, 2009, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., with a 7:00 p.m. rosary service, and at the church on Wednesday, from 9:30 a.m. until time of service.

Pallbearers were: Greg Sromek, Jerry Sromek, Ray Biernat, Jerry Slowiak, Ken Slowiak and Jack Leja.

Vincent Gabriel Slowiak was born on April 20, 1921, in the Town of Thorp, rural Clark County, to Anthony and Frances (Ciolkosz) Slowiak.  He grew up on the family farm in the Junction area, and attended area schools. After receiving his education, he moved to Chicago, where he went to school to become a tool & die maker. Vincent was united in marriage to Marie Polak on July 31, 1948 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Lublin. They lived in Chicago after their marriage and Vincent worked for Aetna Ball Bearing for over 40 years.  He retired in 1987 and they moved to Thorp.

He was a member of St. Bernard-St. Hedwig Catholic Church in Thorp, and a former member of St. John Bosco Catholic Church in Chicago.  Vincent loved working for the Knights of Columbus breakfasts and working at the Quonset for weddings.  In addition, he loved gardening, hunting, fishing and bowling.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Marie, of Thorp; two brothers: John (Alice) Slowiak of Park Ridge, IL, and Ted (Dorothy) Slowiak of Niles, IL; three sisters: Julie Pober of Carmel, IN, Victoria Slowiak and Therese Slowiak, both of Chicago; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Alex Slowiak, Henry Slowiak, and Walter Slowiak; five sisters: Wanda Chuey, Anna Leja, Louise St. Lawrence, Louise Slowiak, and Patronella Slowiak in infancy.
