Berger, William Richard (6 Apr. 1894 - 5 Nov. 1954)

Abbotsford friends joined the family of William R. Berger at brief graveside rites conducted at the Abbotsford cemetery for Mr. Berger, 60, a former resident, who died Nov. 5 at Park Falls. Funeral services were held at 1:00 o’clock at the Brown Funeral Chapel at Park Falls. The Rev. B. F. Schoenfeld officiated at both places.

Pallbearers were two sons-in-law, Henry Voege, of Milwaukee, and Leon Beyerl, of Delavan; Ervin Hoppe and Carl Hartway, of Park Falls; Christ Vogt and Charles Wartgow, of Butternut.

William Richard Berger was born April 6, 1894, in Oshkosh. On June 5, 1918, he was married to Eva Rebecca Johnson at Oconto Falls. They lived at Oconto Falls four years and came to Abbotsford where he farmed northwest of here until 1929, when he became a salesman for Schreiber Milling and Grain of Minneapolis, and then for John Deere Farm Implement Company. He then started the business known as Berger’s Northland Henneries and in 1948 sold it to Frank Brodhagen and moved to Butternut where he purchased land and farmed.

While in Abbotsford he was an active member of the Presbyterian church. He served as director of the Abbotsford school board. After moving away he became a member of the Congregational church of Park Falls.

Mr. Berger was in failing health for some time and was admitted to the Park Falls hospital early in September. Death, caused by cancer, occurred early Friday morning.

Surviving him are his widow, Eva, three daughters, Mrs. Henry (Ruth) Voege, Milwaukee; Mrs. Joseph (Marguerite) Clapp, Norfolk, Va.; and Mrs. Leon (Eva Marie) Beyerl, Delavan; four sisters, Mrs. John Hickey, New York City; Mrs. Emma Ziebell, Perry, Ga.; Mrs. Paul Ketcham, Omaha, Neb.; and Mrs. George Fink, Oshkosh; one brother, John Berger, Omaha, Neb.; and ten grand children.

Among the relatives who attended the funeral were the three daughters, his sister, Mrs. George Fink, Oshkosh; Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Arneson, Mr. and Mrs. Benson Schaub, Oconto Falls; Mr. and Mrs. George Bartlet, Gillett; and John Johnson, Marinette, three sisters and a brother of Mrs. Berger.
