Meier, Marie (1 January 1917 - 3 October 2009)

Marie Meier, 92, of Las Vegas, NV, passed away peacefully Oct. 3, 2009

Marie was born New Year’s Day, 1917, on a farm in Neillsville.  (No parents names were listed) Early years were filled with farm duties, and later she cooked for the local hotel.  She married Frank C. Meier of the same farming community, and in 1950 they moved to Salem, Or, to raise their children, Adeline and Franklin.

She was a dedicated employee of Woolworth’s for 15 years.  Her talent as a seamstress brought her to Shryocks Men’s Store for another 15 years, then to Morry’s for 21 years, as their tailor.  Many locals will remember her from these positions and others as their personal seamstress, working from her home.  She designed and sewed lovely wedding and prom dresses and also worked wonders on common projects. She enjoyed her clients as well as her creations and was 86 when she retired to Las Vegas to live with her daughter.

Cooking for family gave her great joy. Swiss steak, baked beans and cinnamon rolls were frequent requests.  Marie had a sympathetic ear for all, especially in the role of Grandma.  She is dearly loved, and many "Grandmaism" stories reflecting her uniqueness continue to circulate in the family.

Marie exemplified what is described as "The Greatest Generation" - working hard, accepting life’s challenges, giving much and expecting nothing in return.

Since 2006, Marie had resided at an assisted living facility in Las Vegas and was known for carrying an assortment of her stuffed animals in her walker basket.  Each had a name and a story she loved to share.

Marie’s husband preceded her in death, as did her daughter and son-in-law, Addie and Dick McGuire, and grandson, Tim Meier.

She is survived by her son Frank (Carrie), with daughters Cathy, Jennifer and Elizabeth; Addie’s children, Mike (Debbie), Pat, Randy (Tamra), Rick (Kim), and Teri; 12 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Lorraine Shaw, in Neillsville.

At Marie’s request, no services were held, and she will reside beside her husband at City View in Salem, OR.
