Gleanings

 

Ina Palms was a Marshfield visitor Saturday.

 

Frank Carter has sold his famous gray horse.

 

Chester Burnie, now of Ladysmith, was in the city Saturday.

 

Mrs. Wm. Johnston and son Rolla visited in Colby yesterday.

 

Grace McMahn Shanks has been visiting relatives in Neillsville.

 

Walter Carlon and Hixon Mead were down from Longwood Saturday.

 

Miss Etta Shuckhart, who has been visiting her sister, Mrs. Peabody, in this village, for several weeks returned to her home near Elroy Thursday morning--Chronicle.

 

L. Bortle and family, Mrs. W. H. Palms and Will Palms attended the Palms-Loy wedding at Tioga last week, mention of which will be found in the correspondence from that place.

 

The following officers were elected Wednesday evening for Pine Valley Encampment No. 44, I.O.O.F; E. T. Barch, C. P.; Frank Zetsche, H. P.; Wm. H. Rossman, S. W.; Elias Peterson, Scribe; Henry Johnson, Treas.; and W. W. Harlow, J. W.

 

E. E. Davis was down from Greenwood the latter part of last week.--Mondovi Herald.

 

Sheriff-elect R. M. Campbell was up from the county seat Saturday and brought Mrs. F. A. Ball with him.

 

Ferdinand Wollenberg, who is working for the Gibsons at Perkinstown, was an over Sunday and Christmas visitor under the parental roof. He returned to his work Wednesday morning.

 

Rolla Johnston, Jason Mack, Robert Huntzicker and David Shanks returned Saturday morning from their studies in the La Crosse Business University for the holidays.

 

G. H. Palms came down from Thorp Saturday to spend Christmas week with the home folks.

 

Mrs. Emma Brown of Loyal, visited over Tuesday night with Greenwood friends.

 

G. W. Thompson has purchased the three forties, which Wm. Thorn owned two miles west of the river. The deal was closed Thursday.

 

We'll print no more until next century.

 

The Ladies' Guild meets with Mrs. Robt. Schofield next Wednesday.

 

Hans Henrickson came down from Ladysmith to spend Christmas at home.

 

The Presbyterian Sunday School classes of Mrs. H. Franckenberg and Conrad Wellen enjoyed a pleasant sleigh ride to Loyal and back Tuesday.

 

A. W. Calway spendt Tuesday with his people in Neillsville.

 

Wm. Wesenberg has bought the moving outfit from Chris Kippenhan and hereafter will be found right in his own element. Wm. is a success in house moving, well digging and such work.

 

Nettie Barr, who has been teaching in the Sloniker district, passed through town Saturday on her way to Thorp.

 

The work on the new steel bridge across Black river was completed last week and the bridge has been accepted. There is still more stone work to do on the approaches, but this will be left until spring. The bridge is now being used.

 

The Greenwood stores enjoyed an unusual holiday business this year. The sales have been large and considerable money was spent on things as value as well as show and ornamentation. This speaks well both for the buying public and for the merchants.

 

Mr. and Mrs. A. Donaldson of Winona, arrived Saturday for a few days' visit with E. S. Donaldson and wife. The Mrs. Donaldsons are sisters who married men of the same name, but yet of no relation to each other.

 

Our neighbor, Ed. Buker, rejoices over a brand new wood shed which he has been wrestling with for the past few weeks. It's a convenience that most any household could appreciate.

 

Erastus Bowen and family entertained his brother Edward and family from Longwood Christmas day.

 

C. M Hunt and wife entertained relatives from Neillsville Christmas.

 

Henry LaGault was down from Longwood Wednesday. He is a busy man these days, or he is buying hay for the Gilson camps and he says it keeps him on the move to find it and get it to Sawyer's dam.

 

Signe Kristiansen is visiting in Thorp, having accompanied Gertie Nelson home for the holidays.

 

H. H. Hartson wears a number 9 1/2 smile since Wednesday evening, when his wife presented him with a bouncing little girl as a Christmas present. Mother and child are doing nicely.

 

Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Hubbell received a Christmas present Wednesday afternoon in the shape of a healthy little baby girl who will call them "papa' and "mamma." This is their first and of course congratulations are in order.

 

Alice and Eva Miller left Wednesday morning for St. Cloud where they will spend a few days with relatives and friends.

 

Mr. and Mrs. Harry Bryden came up Sunday and spent Christmas with Pete Peterson and family. They were accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Spencer.

 

F. A. Ball of the Point joined his wife here Monday night and spent Christmas with Rev. W. T. Hendren and wife.

 

Mrs. B. P. Churchill went to Neillsville Saturday to spend Christmas under the parental roof. The Doctor went down Tuesday morning.

 

L. Howard and wife were up from Neillsville to spend Christmas with her parents, Al. Holms and wife.

 

We understand that Wm. Youngs has sold his land west of town to Oscar Belden of Mondovi, a son-in-law of J. W. Stanton.

 

Franklin Burroughs and wife of Janesville, who have been visiting their daughter, Mrs. Vernon Clute, have returned to their home.

 

Robert Clark of Philips is visiting at the home of John Lucas.

 

A. Armstrong of Hemlock and C. A. George of Winona were doing business with Real Estate Agent Clute yesterday. With this combination if would be hard to guess who would get the best of the deal.

 

Mrs. Henry Gemmeke presented her husband with a baby girl Tuesday and Henry smiles.

 

C. H. Clute sold 800 acres Wednesday in 28, 3 to Charles and Edward Heller of Calumetville. A few hundred sales like that and there will not be much timber land left to sell.

 

C. H. Estabrooks has been entertaining company from his old home in Fond du Lac county.

 

Fred Williams, Bennie Johnson and David Shanks attended the dance at Loyal Wednesday evening.

 

Anton Kristiansen and his granddaughter, Dagny Bredeson, visited in Longwood Sunday.

 

Manley Austin and several of his men came down from camp to spend Christmas at home.

 

Judging by the marriage license list, wedding bells will be numerous for the next week or so.

 

Wm. Thorn and Ed. Hommel have taken a logging job together for the Foster Lumber Co., to put in timber from the North Mound. They have moved their families out there and hired John Christianson and wife to cook for them. They expect to run a crew of about a dozen men.

 

Revenue Collector C. S. Carman of Grand Rapids was in town last Friday with reference to the new cigar factory, which will be located in E. H. Thompson's building in the rooms formerly use by Dr. Brown.

 

Handy man A. P. Raymond and family have moved from the Hummel farm north of town, into the Morris Markham place in town. This will be much handier for Greenwood's good natured wagon maker.

 

Chas. Miller returned to Greenwood Wednesday morning after several weeks' absence in Idaho. On is way home he stopped with his family in St. Paul and reports them well, except Bride who is in poor health.

 

J. L. McMullen has been arranging for the opening of a cigar factory in Greenwood by his brother Fred McMullen of Syracuse, N. Y.  He will be here again to begin operations the first of next week. For the present he will make only a high grade ten cent cigar.

 

Major Spencer and Miss Cora Freedy of Thorp, were united in marriage at Neillsville last Wednesday evening at 7 o'clock, at the home of the groom's sister, Mrs. H. Bryden. The ceremony was performed by Rev. Ingham of the M. E. church of that place. They came to Greenwood Sunday and remained here until Tuesday, when they went to Thorp to spend Christmas with her folks. The groom is well known here, having resided here nearly all his life. Congratulations.
